Larry Berberick

Lawrence "Larry" Berberick, 62, Athens, Ohio, formerly of Topeka, died Friday, May 21, 1999, when he was stricken at his cabinet workshop in Athens. He had an apparent heart attack.

He was born Feb. 11, 1937, in Topeka, to Jacob G. and Catherine Best Berberick. He graduated from Hayden High School and attended St. Benedict's College in Atchison. He received a bachelor's degree from Washburn University. He was a co-founder of Pizza Hut of Ohio, Inc. He formerly worked for Santa Fe Railway.

He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Athens, Ohio, and a past president of the Athens Country Club. He received the Ohio University Alumni Association Medal of Merit in 1991 and was named an honorary alumnus of Ohio University the following year. He was co-chairman of the first Ohio University sports club fund drive in 1979. He had been named a William H. McGuffey fellow of the Ohio University Trustees Academy. He had served as chairman of the first O'Bleness Memorial Open Golf Tournament in Athens, Ohio. He married Theresa Kamer. She survives. Sons Gregory Berberick and Gerard Berberick died in infancy. Other survivors include sons, Neil Berberick, Charleston, S.C., David Berberick, Athens, Ohio, and Don Berberick, Westerville, Ohio; a daughter, Julie Berberick, Gahanna, Ohio; and his mother, Catherine Berberick, Topeka. Also surviving are brothers, Bill Berberick and Don Berberick, both in Topeka, Joe Berberick, Boise, Idaho, and Jim Berberick, Lee's Summit, Mo.; and sisters, Mary Ann Belden, Overland Park, and Nancy Reeb, Marsha Bartley and Tressa Ann Malecki, all in Topeka. Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Athens, Ohio. Burial will be Wednesday in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Athens, Ohio. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home in Athens, Ohio, where a vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Catholic Church, 38 N.
