Jane Bird

EMPORIA --- Jane Elizabeth Bird, 34, Emporia, was killed in a one- vehicle accident northwest of Emporia on Monday, Oct. 25, 1999.

She was born June 25, 1965, in Emporia, the daughter of Carlton Ardell and Nancy Jane Diebolt Bird. She had a lifelong interest in art and as a high school student was awarded two Gold Key awards and a Hallmark award for her exhibits at the Kansas Scholastic Art Show. She studied art at Emporia State University and was working toward an art history degree at the University of Kansas.

Ms. Bird was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia.

She married Eklief Tarawneh on Jan. 3, 1990, in Emporia. They were divorced.

Survivors include her parents, Carlton and Nancy Bird, Emporia; two brothers, Todd C. Bird, Phoenix, Ariz., and Michael J. Bird, Shawnee; three sisters, Sharon K. Moore, Spring, Texas, Laura A. Moreland, Americus, and Brenda J. Bird, Eudora; and two grandmothers, Marguerite M. Diebolt and Gladys E. Bird, both of Emporia.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia. Inurnment at the church cemetery will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of the Flint Hills and sent in care of the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia.

Mary Glace

CLAY CENTER --- Mary Elizabeth Glace, 86, Clay Center, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at a Clay Center nursing home.

She was born Jan. 26, 1913, at Clay Center, the daughter of James Harvey and Ethel Brown Griffin. She graduated from Clay Center High School in 1929, and from Cotty College in Nevada, Mo., in 1931.

Mrs. Glace was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Library Club and Extension Homemakers Unit, all in Clay Center.

She married Jacob Glace in 1931. He died Oct. 6, 1970. Mrs. Glace also was preceded in death by a daughter.

Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Wilhelm, Clay Center; a sister, Helen Macy Skolaut, Clay Center; and two granddaughters.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Chapel in Clay Center. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Meadowlark Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home.

Hazel Gould

CONCORDIA --- Hazel Gould, 93, Concordia, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at a Concordia senior community.

Mrs. Gould was the bookkeeper and office manager for Gould Implement until she retired.

She was born June 23, 1906, at Concordia, the daughter of Pearl L. and Vernona Nelson Wagner.

Mrs. Gould was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women of the church.

She married Orrin D. Gould on Sept. 24, 1925. He died May 16, 1983. Mrs. Gould also was preceded in death by a grandson, Mike.

Survivors include two sons, Harold L. Gould, Redwood City, Calif., and Jack D. Gould, Concordia; a brother, Glenn Wagner, Manhattan; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Nutter Mortuary Chapel in Concordia. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Concordia. Mrs. Gould will lie in state from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. The casket will remain closed.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or to the Mount Joseph Community Center and sent in care of the funeral home.

Claire Gretencord

RICHMOND --- Claire Gretencord, 74, Richmond, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at an Olathe hospital.

She was born Nov. 25, 1924, in Richmond, the daughter of John and Mary Benus Gretencord. She was a lifelong Richmond resident.

Miss Gretencord was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church and the Altar Society at the church. She also sang in the church choir and was liturgist.

Survivors include two sisters, Rose Gretencord and Beatrice Bures, both of Richmond.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patricks Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery at Scipio. A rosary recited at 7 p.m. today at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett will be followed by visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patricks Catholic Church for Mass Intentions and sent in care of the funeral chapel.

Wilberta Herron

JUNCTION CITY --- Wilberta Charlene Herron, 75, Junction City, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at a Junction City hospital.

Mrs. Herron was a teacher and an artist. She taught for a year each in Lyndon and Americus and for several years in rural schools in Geary County. She also taught for many years at Fort Riley. She also was a pianist and had been featured on radio programs as a young woman.

She was born March 10, 1924, in Emporia, the daughter of Charles E. and Agnes M. Bechtal Gay. She graduated from Emporia High School in 1942 and from Emporia State University in 1946. She also had studied the piano for 16 years.

Mrs. Herron was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, EEU at Humboldt Creek and a former 40-year member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha.

She married Jack L. Herron on June 29, 1947, in Emporia. He survives.
