- The Cosmopolitan Club of Topeka recently announced its officers for 2000.

They are: Dick Nelson, Bankers Life & Casualty, president; Rex Haney, president-elect; Kay Houser, vice president-programs; Kenda Douglas, vice president-social; Chiquita Cornelius, secretary; and Harvey Ferguson, treasurer/judge advocate.

The Cosmopolitan Club is dedicated to supporting efforts to prevent and find a cure for diabetes. It meets at noon Thursdays at the Topeka Country Club. For more information, call Nelson at 273- 8200.

- The Topeka Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management leaders recently attended the 2000 Tri-State Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Mo.

The conference theme was "Stimulate, Motivate, Lead, Succeed!" SHRM leaders from Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska attended the conference, where they learned goals and strategies to improve the quality of programming and services to local chapter members, employers and the community.

Chapter leaders in attendance were: Jamesina M. Evans, Cynthia Stotlar, Brenda Devlin, Margo Stewart, Mark Rau, Connie Reynolds, Len Chmelka and Ellen Bishop.

- Kansas high school seniors who are interested in an accounting career may apply for scholarships through the Educational Foundation of the Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants.

For the 2000-01 school year, 10 awards totaling $3,800 will be given to high school graduates who receive high scores on the ACT or SAT examinations. In addition to test scores, seniors must have an expressed interest in accounting and will be required to fill out a questionnaire and short essay furnished by the foundation. Awards are given without regard to financial need to students with ACT scores of 25 or above.

Awards will be paid to winning students when they enroll at a Kansas college or university offering a major or concentration in accounting.

Interested students should ask the testing company, teacher or counselor send a copy of their test scores along with verification of the student's home address to the KSCPA Educational Foundation, P.O. Box 5654, Topeka 66605, by March 17.

- The Kansas World Trade Center recently launched a unique resource to assist Kansas businesses in international trade.

The KWTC, which is based in Wichita, has created a CD-ROM tutorial called "Export Like An Expert" that helps prepare businesses to sell products and services abroad and provides numerous Internet links to local, state and national trade resources. It also incorporates an electronic worksheet that guides companies through the process of world commerce.

- The Alzheimer's Association's Topeka chapter recently elected officers and board members for the year.

The officers are: Bob Fox, special counsel with the law firm of Foulston & Siefkin, president; Rick Friedstrom, New York Life Insurance Co., vice president; Bill Myers, secretary-treasurer; and C. Rick Jensen, regional vice president of Lenox Inc., past president.

New board members are: Mary Beisner, licensed practical nurse, admissions director at Kenwood View of Salina; Nadine Dexter, Menninger Clinic; Walt Frederick, community volunteer, employed by the Kansas Army National Guard; and Bill Myers, consultant with Partners in Philanthropy.

- The International Black Student Alliance of Topeka is offering a free online Internet listing for certified minority-owned businesses in Kansas.

The IBSA's efforts are to aid and assist in the promotion and development of Kansas minority-owned businesses through Internet and other online strategy. Only businesses certified with the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing are eligible.

- The Simon Youth Foundation has announced the establishment of a national scholarship program that qualified students can apply for at Simon-owned malls nationwide.

Simon owns West Ridge Mall in Topeka.

The program will award a one-time monetary scholarship of $1,500 to a select number of high school seniors who plan to enroll in any accredited college, university or vocational-technical school and who meet the program's eligibility requirements.

Area students who want to be considered for the scholarships can obtain an application form at the customer information center at West Ridge Mall. Students must complete this form and submit it along with their official school transcripts and parents' most recently filed tax form to Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America Inc. by March 31. CSFA is the third-party administrator of the program.

Recipients will be notified by the end of May.

- The College of Business Administration at Kansas State University recently received a $150,000 grant of e-commerce software and training as part of a Merant Corp. program.

The software will enable faculty and students to develop Internet- based e-commerce systems similar to those being used by many Web- based companies.

Roger McHaney, assistant professor of management information systems, authored the grant application, and Constanza Hagmann, of the management information systems office, participated in the project as well.
