Bogren headed for Pan-Am meet

Brooke Bogren, who two years ago was the first girl to qualify for the state high school wrestling meet, won the 52-kilo division at the Cadet Women's National Championship last weekend to qualify for the Pan-American Games.
Bogren, 16, a student at Santa Fe Trail, was named outstanding cadet wrestler at the tournament last weekend in Battle Creek, Mich. She is set to compete in the Pan-Am Games from July 16 to 22 in Lima, Peru.
- Jerry Henson of Topeka was inducted into the 2000 Special Olympics Hall of Fame during the Summer Games, held June 2-4 in Wichita. Henson, 42, has competed in Special Olumpics for 15 years in track and field, bowling, powerlifting, soccer, softball and volleyball. He is the son of Geneva Brown of Topeka.
- The Dingoes, an under-14 boys 3-on-3 soccer team from Topeka, won the Sunny Delight Soccer Shootout last weekend at Wichita State University, qualifying them for the Rocky Mountain Regional Finals, to be held Aug. 4 to 6 in Vail, Colo. This is the Dingoes' second straight regional appearance, and last year they advanced to the national finals in Orlando, Fla.
Team members are Tom Apitz, Cole Copeland, Brady Prentice, Matt Stoland and Colby Weddle. Malcolm Copeland is coach.
- The SEK Twisters, a 16-under fastpitch softball team, opened its season by winning the single-elimination Memorial Day Classic at the Johnson County Girls Softball Complex. The win gained the Twisters a berth in ASA Nationals, which is held the last weekend in July.
The Twisters were the 1999 ASA Kansas champions and placed fifth in the Midwest Regionals in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This year's team comprises Sara Thom, MaKenna Langford, Cassie Buche, Abby Buche, Brooke Marshall, Whitney Yates, Lynsey Maxwell, Liz Anselmi, Lindsey Owen and Natalie Stewart.
- Kyle Hill, the son of Patricia Trotter of Topeka, was named a Heart of America Athletic Conference scholar athlete. Hill, who plays basketball at William Jewell, is a junior accounting major who earned a 3.64 grade-point average.
- Tyler Dobelbower, a sophomore at Washburn Rural, has been named to the Kansas Fellowship of Christian Athletes 2000 All-State team. The team comprises 10 boys and 11 girls from throughout the state and is chosen based on involvement in FCA and athletic and academic achievement. Dobelbower won state titles in the 200 intermediate medley and 100 backstroke.
- Topeka native Kandice Epperson has earned a Presidential Scholar Athlete Award at Wayne State University, in Wayne, Neb.
