Marilyn Bland

OTTAWA --- Marilyn Kay Bland, 55, formerly of Ottawa, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, in Eudora.

Mrs. Bland was an environmental ecologist for NUS, an engineering consulting firm in Pittsburgh, Pa. She also worked for SRI, an institute that once was a research arm of Stanford University at Palo Alto, Calif.

She was born Nov. 22, 1944, on a farm near Enid, Okla., the daughter of Clyde Murrel and Tennyson Irene Welty Bland. She graduated from Ottawa High School and Principia College in Elsah, Ill. She earned a master's degree and a doctorate in botany at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. She lived in Medford, Ore., and later near Boulder, Colo. She moved to Eudora from Elsah, Ill.

Mrs. Bland was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist at Elsah, Ill.

Survivors include two brothers, Murrel Bland, Kansas City, Kan., and Milton Bland, Eudora.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Elsah, Ill., and sent in care of Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home in Ottawa.

Letha Burkett

BURLINGAME --- Letha M. Burkett, 85, Burlingame, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at a Topeka hospital.

Mrs. Burkett worked at Osage Paper Products in Osage City for several years.

She was born May 15, 1915, in Burlingame, the daughter of William J. and Iola Tindell Miller. She was raised at Fostoria and attended Burlingame schools.

Mrs. Burkett was a member of the Burlingame Federated Church and the Ladies Auxiliary to the Gene and Elroy Schenck Post No. 7584 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Burlingame.

She married W.B. York. They were divorced. She later married Edwin E. Burkett. He preceded her in death March 23, 1989. A son, Wallace D. York, preceded her in death in 1967.

Survivors include two sons, Edwin "Eddie" Burkett, Scranton, and Bill York, Vassar; a daughter, Cheryl Kay Shattuck, Knob Noster, Mo.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Burlingame Cemetery in Burlingame. Mrs. Burkett will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Carey Funeral Home in Burlingame. The casket will remain closed.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Burlingame Federated Church or to the American Heart Association, and sent in care of the funeral home.

Merle Burton

WHITE CITY --- Merle Wayne Burton, 75, White City, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at a Topeka hospice.

Mr. Burton worked in tool and die for Beach Aircraft in Wichita, and then went to work for Convair Aircraft in California in 1968. He later helped manage National Brake Supply in San Diego, and was an outside salesman for National Brake Supply in Los Angeles. He served in the Army in the European Theater of Operation during World War II, and he received a purple heart.

He was born Oct. 6, 1924, in Council Grove, the son of Lee and Velda Wright Burton. He moved back to White City form California in 1988.

Mr. Burton was a member of White City Christian Church and Teddy L. Wilde Post No. 299 of the American Legion.

He married Thelma Rader on July 27, 1952, near Parkerville. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Dennis Burton, Portland, Ore., and Glenn Burton, El Cajon, Calif.; a daughter, Linda Slater, El Cajon; a brother, Arnold Burton, Modesto, Calif.; a half brother, Tom O'Meara, Council Grove; a half sister, Patricia Hill, San Jose, Calif.; and a grandson.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at White City Christian Church. Inurnment with graveside military honors conducted by a Fort Riley Honor Guard will be in Burton Cemetery near Parkerville.

Memorial contributions may be made to White City Christian Church or to Midland Hospice House in Topeka, and sent in care of Kendall Funeral Chapel in Council Grove.

Amos Chase

GRANTVILLE --- Amos K. Chase, 83, Grantville, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at a Sioux Falls, S.D., hospital.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will be in the Mayetta Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Potawatomi United Methodist Church, and sent in care of the funeral home.

Cynthia Frye

MCLOUTH --- Cynthia M. Frye, 98, McLouth, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at an Oskaloosa nursing home.

Mrs. Frye owned and operated Dairy Delight in Abilene.

She was born Jan. 31, 1902, in Hub City, Wis., the daughter of Fred and Cora Hall Johnson. She moved into the Douglas and Jefferson County area in the 1960s.

Mrs. Frye was a member of the McLouth Church of the Nazarene.

She married Hallie Frye on Aug. 19, 1920, in Rock Bridge, Wis. He preceded her in death Dec. 6, 1980. Mrs. Frye also was preceded in death by a daughter, Helena Lloyd.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruby Weigler, St. Joseph, Mo.; four sons, Harold Frye, Muncie, Ind.., Lyle Frye, McLouth, Ernest Frye, St. Joseph, and Gene Frye, Lake Viking, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren.
