- Area high school notebook Burlingame

Volleyball --- Burlingame tied for second in its pool at the Pomona Tournament, but lost out on advancing to the semifinals via a tiebreaker. The Bearcats (5-13) put up a tough fight in dropping to 0- 4 in Lyon County League play Tuesday with losses to Madison and Olpe.

Jackson Heights

Cross country --- The Dragon boys, ranked No. 8 in Class 2A, dominated the Wabaunsee Invitational, putting four in the top eight for a winning total of 26. Mitch Bagby led the way in second, followed by Chris Holliday (fifth), Paul Koci (sixth) and Andy Fenton (eighth). Brad Alley (20th) also medaled. Lindsay Wilhelm led the girls' squad to a runner-up showing with a fourth-place finish and Joanna Schafer was 11th.

Volleyball --- Heights split its Delaware Valley League matches Tuesday, beating Pleasant Ridge 15-10, 15-0 and falling to Wathena 15- 2, 15-12. The team had eight aces against Pleasant Ridge and is 5-11 overall.

Jefferson West

Volleyball --- Jefferson West added two more Big Seven League victories to its ledger, sweeping Nemaha Valley and Royal Valley on Tuesday. In both matches, the Tigers fought off a challenge in the second game.

Lyndon

Cross country --- Lyndon survived a rainy Ottawa Invitational with three top-10 finishes. Desiraye and Jesi Osburn pulled the feat for the girls, placing fifth and eighth, respectively. Both broke 14 minutes. Tim Cox was eighth for the boys in 19:02.

Football --- Tiger quarterback Caleb Knoernschild threw a touchdown pass for the fourth consecutive game in Tuesday's 32-14 loss to Frankfort. The game was tied early in the first quarter and was an 18-14 game at halftime.

Volleyball --- Jamie Schmitz and Jabeth Coachman were named to the Pomona All-Tournament team after helping the Tigers to a runner-up finish. Lyndon was second in its pool to Osage City and then fell to the Indians in the finals, 14-16, 15-0, 15-7.

Marais des Cygnes Valley

Volleyball --- Melissa Scheele was picked to the all-tourney team at the Pomona Tournament. The Trojans won their pool and wound up placing third, topping Royal Valley in the third-place match.

Mission Valley

Cross country --- The team results might not have been exactly what coach Alan Webb wanted, but Saturday's Seaman Invitational was good to the Vikings. Blair Spencer highlighted the effort with a runner-up showing in the girls' 2-mile race, clocking a season-best 12:17. In fact, all of the Viking girls posted season-bests, five setting their career best. Tina Todd was 14th and the Viking girls, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A in the latest coaches rankings, placed sixth.

The boys' squad also had four personal bests, including a 17:50 from 25th-place finisher Ryan Patrick. The Vikings' top five times were faster than Mission Valley's No. 3 runner last year at the meet.

Osage City

Golf --- A fifth-person tiebreaker gave the Indians a third-place finish at Tuesday's Santa Fe Trail Invitational. Osage and Trail each totalled 218, finishing behind Anderson County and Gardner. Ashley Brown (50) was fifth and Lindsay Bond (51) placed seventh. The Indians' JV took eighth at Council Grove last Thursday.

Volleyball --- The Indians will get a well-deserved week off after winning Saturday's Pomona Tournament, which upped their season record to 15-3. Osage cruised through pool play 3-0 and then hammered Royal Valley 15-12, 15-5 to reach the finals. After dropping the first game to Lyndon, 16-14, Osage roared back with 15-0, 15-7 wins to win the title. Kendra Paul, Amie Haskins and Shannon Sebring were all- tournament team picks.

Rossville

Golf --- Joan Donovan shot a 42 and took first at last Thursday's Council Grove Invitational. Holly Gentry carded a 48 and was ninth and the Bulldogs placed fifth with a 204.

Volleyball --- The Bulldogs moved into the No. 1 ranking in Class 2A Kansas Volleyball Association poll, jumping up from No. 3.

Royal Valley

Cross country --- Ashley Chapman showed why she's one of the top runners in 3A, hanging with Riley County's Erin Mortimer for the first mile of the Royal Valley Invitational. Chapman outdueled Hayden's Stacee Marshall late to finish third in 11:35.69. Laura Thurman also was in the top 10, taking eighth. Kyle Taylor's eighth- place showing paced the Panther boys and Denton Lambrecht medaled in 23rd.

Volleyball --- Royal Valley's 2-3 mark and fourth-place finish at the Pomona Tournament was highlighted by a tourney-opening three- game win over top-seeded Olathe Christian. The Panthers also beat Williamsburg in three games, but fell twice to Marais des Cygnes Valley and once to Osage City.

Mollee Tuck was 18-of-18 serving and had six aces and seven assists against Olathe. Laura Smith and Sarah Goetz each had eight aces and Shamara Millard recorded six blocks against Williamsburg.

Santa Fe Trail

Cross country --- Courtney Thompson ran to a 16th-place finish at last Thursday's Royal Valley Invitational, clocking a 12:35.50. Erica Kraus also medaled in 27th. Matt Hall was 20th for the Charger boys.

Golf --- Chelsey Schlotterback defended her home course, winning Tuesday's Santa Fe Trail Invitational with a round of 48. Nicole Prochaska was sixth with a 50 and Nicole Cooper took 10th with a 553. The Chargers tied Osage for third, but wound up fourth on the fifth- score tiebreaker.
