Richard James

Richard Allen James, 58, Topeka, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. James was a tire builder for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. until he retired.

He was born Jan. 23, 1942, in Bell, Calif., the son of Raleigh Estil and Elizabeth Dreher James. He moved to Topeka from California in 1966.

Mr. James was a member of The Church of Christ and United Steel Workers of America Local No. 307.

He married Gertrude Archuleta on May 8, 1959, in Cudahy, Calif. She preceded him in death June 2, 1991.

Survivors include a companion, Bonnie Vaughn, at home; his mother, Elizabeth James, Lincoln, Ark.; three daughters, Debra Lynn Canada, Dianne Lea Smith and Dawn Louise Roe, all of Fayetteville, Ark.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. James was cremated. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. today at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. Inurnment is pending.

Bernard Kopp

Bernard Conrad "Barney" Kopp, 67, Topeka, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Kopp worked for Seaboard Milling for 10 years and for Cargil Milling for 27 years before he retired as a supervisor in 1993. He retired from Swift after driving a truck for two years. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was born April 17, 1933, in Axtell, the son of John and Agnes Kreutzman Kopp. He graduated from Beattie High School in 1950. He moved to Beattie from Axtell in 1943. He moved to Topeka in 1955.

Mr. Kopp was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. He served two years as a scout leader of Cub Scout Pack No. 49, and 10 years for Boy Scout Troop No. 10.

He married Elsie J. Haid on June 1, 1968, in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Ivan W. Kopp, Topeka; seven brothers, John Kopp, Waterloo, Iowa, Kenneth Kopp, Home, Raymond Kopp, Lincoln, Neb., Carl Kopp, Beattie, Francis Kopp, Havensville, Joseph Kopp, Lincoln, Neb., and Lawrence Kopp, Beattie; two sisters, Mary Janca, Omaha, Neb., and Rose Neuhous, Schuyler, Neb.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Kopp will lie in state after noon today at Parker-Price Mortuary, where relatives and friends will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Mary Moore

Mary Ethel Brodie Moore, 79, formerly of Topeka, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, in Wichita.

She was born March 17, 1921, in Little Rock, Ark., the daughter of Harvey Nora Frazier Shofner.

Mrs. Moore was a member of Beulah Chapter No. 34 of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Arab Shrine Nobelles in Topeka.

Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by two husbands, her first, Charles "Steve" Brodie, and later by her second husband, Fred Moore, on Nov. 17, 1993. She also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Julie Ann Brodie.
