CITY HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK

Cair Paravel

Basketball --- The Lions' boys and girls teams will play in the Capital City Classic during the 2000-2001 season.

Soccer --- Doug Congdon, a senior, was named the school's student athlete of the month. He is a stopper on the soccer team and has five goals and eight assists this season.

Cair Paravel beat Berean Christian of Olathe 3-0 and on Saturday the Lions won the Silver Lake Tournament, with sophomore Jon Vogel being named the tournament's most valuable player.

Sophomore Josh Armfield has scored eight goals and been credited with one assist this season, while Vogel has scored seven goals and been credited with six assists.

The Lions are now 10-1-2 and have scored 38 goals while allowing just 11.

Volleyball --- Cair Paravel won its first match of the season, beating Mission Oaks Christian School, 15-3, 15-5. The Lions will compete in the City Tournament on Saturday at Hayden.

Seaman

Volleyball --- The Vikings are now 20-3 on the season. In recent matches, Seaman lost to Washburn Rural and defeated Hayden, Topeka West, Topeka High and Leavenworth.

The Vikings travel to Junction City today to take on Shawnee Heights, Topeka High and Junction City and will take part in the City Tournament on Saturday at Hayden.

Seaman has been led by Lori Leiker in assists this season, while Ashlea Kramer, Whitney McDaniel and sophomore Carrie Owens have been key players offensively.

Shawnee Heights

Soccer --- The T-Birds are 7-3-1 on the season and will travel to Leavenworth today before playing host to Shawnee Mission South Thursday for Senior Night.

Mark Kapfer leads the T-Birds with six goals and three assists this season, while Kellen Lundry and Shawn Hubbard have both scored four goals apiece.

Hubbard, Nathan Hunt, Scott Richardson, Jeff O'Connor and Caleb Leiker all have been credited with two assists.

Tennis --- The doubles team of Lindsey Sims and Brandi Wadley finished third to lead the T-Birds in the Centennial/I-70 League tournament last week at Hayden.

Topeka High

Cross country --- The Trojans boys and girls competed Saturday in the Shawnee Heights Invitational at Lake Shawnee, with the boys placing fourth as a team with three runners in the top 20.

Senior Mark Holcomb led High with a seventh-place finish, while junior Blake Beckmann finished 13th and senior Andrew Buckland took 20th.

Junior Andrea Faulkner finished 15th in the girls varsity race, while sophomore Stephanie Dicken and senior Erin Castenada were next in line for the Trojans.

Freshman Jared Houghtaling captured the sixth-place medal in the boys junior varsity race.

Tennis --- Topeka High was the only school to medal all of its players in both the varsity and junior varsity City Tournaments.

Soccer --- The Trojans are now 8-3 after beating Highland Park (9- 0), Lawrence (3-0) and Olathe South (3-2) last week. On Thursday, Topeka High will travel to Manhattan for an I-70 League game.

Current statistical leaders for the Trojans (not including the Olathe South game) are Andrew Franklin with 11 goals and two assists, Ryan Kinder with eight goals and five assists, Brogan Conklin with six goals and seven assists, Ray Mendoza-Borrega with four goals and one assist and Carlos Espinoza-Baltazar with four goals and two assists.

Goalie Justin Crawford has posted 5 1/2 shutouts this season, while allowing just two goals, while Mason Riphahn has recorded 4 1/ 2 shutouts while allowing eight goals.

Washburn Rural

Soccer --- The Junior Blues are currently 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the Centennial League. Last week, the Junior Blues played a pair of non-league games, losing 3-2 to Manhattan and whipping Junction City 11-1.

Washburn Rural played Monday at Lee's Summit, Mo., and will play host to Pembroke Hill on Thursday. Next week, Rural begins Centennial League Tournament competition.
