Larry Hoover

BURLINGTON --- Larry E. Hoover, 64, Burlington, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, in Branson, Mo.

Mr. Hoover had been in the grocery business and was a meat cutter most his life. He began work in a grocery store in Burlington at the age of 14. He later was a meat cutter in Topeka for 12 years, and then in California for seven years. He worked at an Osage City grocery until 1978 and then was partner in the Lyndon Thriftway Store until he opened Hoovers Thriftway in Burlington in February 1987. He also served in the Kansas National Guard Reserve in Burlington.

He was born Sept. 12, 1936, in Burlington, the son of Burleigh L. and Mary Alma Newkirk Hoover. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1954.

Mr. Hoover was a member of Burlington United Methodist Church, Coffey County Airport Board, the Prairie Promenaders, Coffey County Chamber of Commerce and the Burlington Rotary Club.

He married Carlita F. Barrett on Oct. 2, 1955, in Burlington. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Tammy Salva and Lisa Hoover, both of Burlington; a son, Ron Hoover, Burlington; a brother, Howard Hoover, Topeka; three sisters, Fern Manderino, Marjorie Herr and Norma Hudson, all of Topeka; and six grandchildren.

Mr. Hoover was preceded in death by a son, Rodney L. Hoover, Feb. 19, 1987.

Services will be announced by Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Burlington.

Memorial contributions may be made either to American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, or Polycystic Kidney Disease fund, sent in care of the funeral home.

Edith Johnston

WESTPHALIA --- Edith M. Johnston, 88, Westphalia, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at a Garnett nursing home.

She was born Nov. 15, 1911, in Bennington, the daughter of James Melvin and Safrona Karstadt.

Mrs. Johnston was a member of Cherry Mound Community Church and the Gideons Auxiliary.

She married Will Johnston on March 29, 1932, at Bennington. He survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Milton Johnston, Gladstone, Mo., and Raymond Johnston, Kansas City, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. Burial will be at Cherry Mound Cemetery at Westphalia. Mrs. Johnston will lie in state after 8 a.m. today at the funeral chapel, where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International or the First Baptist Church in Garnett. They may be sent in care of the funeral chapel.

Mary Werner

EL DORADO --- Mary E. Werner, 89, El Dorado, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at an El Dorado nursing home.

Mrs. Werner had been a nurses' assistant at St. John's Hospital for many years.

She was born June 22, 1911, in Tampa, the daughter of William Robert and Elizabeth M. Furstenburg Guth.

Mrs. Werner was a member of St. John's Catholic Church.

She married Clarence M. Werner on Sept. 22, 1938, at Newbury. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, William C. "Bill" Werner, Dodge City; a daughter, Elizabeth J. "Betty" Boardman, El Dorado; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church in El Dorado. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Salina. A rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincents DePaul Society and sent in care of the church or Kirby-Morris Funeral Home in El Dorado.
