- Shay's record still stands --- Westminster beat Grove City, Pa., 23-0 on Saturday and for at least one week stopped Wolverines star R.J. Bowers from breaking the NCAA all-division career rushing record. Bowers needed 149 yards to break Brian Shay's career record of 6,958 set in 1998 at Emporia State. Westminster (6-1) held Bowers to just 62 yards on 23 carries, meaning Bowers will need 88 yards to break Shay's record when Grove City (3-4) travels to Bethany, W.Va., next week.
- Redskins fined $20,000 --- The NFL fined the Washington Redskins $20,000 for breaking league crowd-noise control rules by using their public address system for cheerleading during the team's victory over Tampa Bay on Oct. 1. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Friday that league officials imposed the fine on Oct. 9. The NFL is also investigating whether the Redskins committed a similar violation during last week's game against Baltimore.
Basketball
- Iverson's ankle sprain mild --- Philadelphia 76ers guard Allen Iverson is not expected to miss any playing time with a mild ankle sprain. Iverson, who injured his left ankle in the 76ers' 117-97 exhibition victory over the Washington Wizards on Friday night, was examined by team physician Dr. Jack McPhillemy on Saturday. Iverson is listed as probable for today's preseason game against Utah. Iverson, the NBA's leading scorer two years ago and runner-up last season, turned the ankle while going after a defensive rebound.
- Rex Walters waived by Indiana --- Veteran guards Rex Walters and Mitchell Butler were waived by the Indiana Pacers on Saturday. Walters, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound guard from Kansas, played in 33 games last season with the Miami Heat. He was taken by the New Jersey Nets in the first round of the 1993 NBA draft and also played for the Philadelphia 76ers. He had his best season in 1996-97, averaging 6.8 points in 59 games for the 76ers. In his seven-year career, he's averaged 4.6 points for 335 games.
General
- Golota in hospital --- Andrew Golota, who quit after two rounds of his bout with Mike Tyson, was in the hospital Saturday and under observation for a concussion, the fighter's promoter said. Main Events spokesman Donald Tremblay said he was told by Kathy Duva, the firm's chief executive officer, that Golota complained of nausea during the night and upon returning home to Chicago had head pain and more nausea. "They're running various tests," said the boxer's wife, Mariola, adding that Golota was admitted to Resurrection Medical Center under a different name. "They're going to run other CAT scans and an MRI."
- Six lifters fail drug tests at Paralympics --- Drugs threatened to overshadow the Sydney Paralympics after it was announced Sunday that two more powerlifters failed pre-games tests. That raised to six the number of powerlifting drugs cases, with four athletes already banned for four years. They are the first Paralympians to fail drug tests since 1992, although Sydney is the first host city to introduce out-of-competition testing. Sydney organizers conducted 129 doping tests in the week before the Oct. 18 opening ceremony.

- Williams, Davenport to meet in final --- Venus Williams, who has not lost since June 6, won her 35th straight match by beating Chanda Rubin 6-4, 6-0 Saturday and will face Lindsay Davenport in the final of the $535,000 Generali Ladies Open in Linz, Austria. In the other semifinal, the top-seeded Davenport played flawlessly in routing Kveta Hrdlickova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-1, setting up a compelling title match today.
- Norman in Heineken Open final --- Defending champion Magnus Norman surged into the final of the Heineken Open, downing 1998 champ Michael Chang 6-3, 6-1 on Saturday in Shanghai, China. Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan and Meghann Shaghnessy won in straight sets and will meet in the women's final. Tulyaganova upset third-seeded Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand 6-1, 6-4. Shaughnessy, seeded fourth, defeated Pavlina Nola of Bulgaria 7-5, 6-2. Norman will face Sjeng Schalken in the title match today.
- All Spanish final in Toulouse --- Spaniards Alex Corretja and Carlos Moya advanced to the final of the $400,000 Toulouse Open with victories in their semifinal matches on Saturday in Toulouse, France. The top-seeded Corretja beat third-ranked Marcelo Rios of Chile 7-6 (6), 6-3. Moya, ranked 40th, defeated Max Mirnyi of Belarus 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Soccer
- Chicago Fire wins U.S. Open Cup --- Six days after losing the MLS Cup, the Chicago Fire beat the Miami Fusion 2-1 Saturday night to win the U.S. Open Cup title. It was the second Open Cup title for the Fire, who captured both the MLS and Open Cup titles in 1998, their first year. Hristo Stoitchkov tapped a soft pass from Ante Razov into the goal in the 44th minute, and the Fire made it 2-0 in the 88th minute on Tyrone Marshall's own-goal. Welton scored the Fusion's only goal in the sixth minute of injury time at the end of the game. The Fire outshot the Kansas City Wizards 22-6 in last Sunday's MLS Cup, but still lost as MVP Tony Meola made 10 saves..
