Area high school notebook
Burlingame
Wrestling --- Burlingame senior Tyler Parsons won the 145-pound crown Saturday at the Onaga Invitational. Parsons won a 12-5 major decision over Wabaunsee's Steve Hurla in the finals.
Holton
Boys basketball --- The Wildcats evened their record at 2-2 with a huge 71-64 road win Tuesday night at Jefferson West. Holton, 2-0 in Big Seven League play, nearly lost a 21-point fourth-quarter lead, but Robert Wilson sank six free throws in the final minute to seal the win. Wilson was 11 of 14 at the line and finished with 21 points.
"It's a quality win on the road in the Big Seven," Holton coach Kurt Haussler said. "Jefferson West is a very good team."
Girls basketball --- The Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday at Jefferson West, falling 54-47. Erin Morris scored 21 in the loss, matching her total in last Friday's win over Hiawatha.
Jackson Heights
Boys basketball --- Jackson Heights placed third last week in the Delaware Valley League Tournament, beating Jefferson North 55-53 in the third-place game. The Cobras pushed champ Valley Falls to the limit in a 71-68 semifinal loss.
Jefferson West
Boys basketball --- The Tigers scored a whopping 32 fourth- quarter points Tuesday against Holton. But they only managed 32 in the three other quarters and lost 71-64. Jeff West whittled a 21- point fourth-quarter deficit to two points but couldn't complete the stunning comeback. Dave Jensen's 17 points led three Tigers in double figures.
Girls basketball --- On consecutive outings, Jeff West has knocked off teams that finished ahead of it in the league standings last year, first beating Effingham last Friday and then taking out Holton on Tuesday. Sheena Hill hit three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to spark Tuesday's win after scoring 26 and 21 in the Tigers' first two games. Hill is averaging 23.5 points per game.
"We were feeling pretty confident coming off last Friday," Tiger coach Jennie Burkin said. "This was a huge win for us."
Lyndon
Boys basketball --- Under first-year coach Doug DeLay, the Tigers are off to a strong 3-0 start in Lyon County League play. Lyndon (3- 1 overall) beat Madison 51-37 in its league opener, then knocked off league favorite Waverly 78-65 and on Tuesday won at Olpe 58-57. Caleb Knoernschild hit 17 of 19 free throws en route to 27 points against Waverly and Tim Cox hit five 3-pointers on his way to 22 points. Aaron Bilyeu chipped in 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Cox leads the team with a 14.7 ppg scoring average and both Knoernschild and Bilyeu average 11.7.
"We have gotten progressively better, especially at the defensive end," DeLay said. "Key players have stepped up and shown real experience and leadership in crunch time."
Marais des Cygnes Valley
Boys basketball --- The Trojans split games, falling 56-54 to Olpe on Friday and beating LeRoy on Tuesday, moving to 3-1 on the season. Tidus Spencer had 21 in the 57-42 victory over LeRoy.
Girls basketball --- Also 3-1, the Trojan girls suffered the same fate as the boys, losing to Olpe (47-30) and beating LeRoy (70-52). Kelli Burkdoll scored 14 against LeRoy.
Osage City
Boys basketball --- The Indians improved to 4-0 with a 65-17 destruction of Pomona, tossing a shutout in the first quarter. Kyle Loschke and Chris Pitts each had 11 points in the win.
Girls basketball --- Rachel Richard's 15 points keyed a 46-41 victory over Pomona that boosted the Indians' record to 3-1.
Rossville
Boys basketball --- The Bulldogs have won three straight after opening the season with a loss. Rossville beat Wabaunsee 53-35 last Friday and then dropped Jackson Heights 67-53 on Tuesday. Derek Dick had 28 points in both games.
Girls basketball --- The Bulldogs improved to 3-1 with wins over Wabaunsee (53-35) and Jackson Heights (57-38). Lena Cooper led the Bulldogs with 15 and 18 points, respectively.
Wrestling --- The Bulldogs picked up seven top-four finishers en route to a sixth-place finish Saturday at the Tri-State Tournament in Sabetha. Sophomore Cody Lambotte improved to 6-0 by winning the 130- pound crown. He won his championship match by a 13-2 major decision.
Rossville got third-place finishes from Chris Graves (112), Matt Creeven (125) and Matt Heslet (152) and fourths from Kyle Casey (135), Josh Gentry (140) and Travis VanVleck (145). Graves has lost just once in seven matches, and Creeven and Gentry have suffered two losses each.
Royal Valley
Boys basketball --- Losses to Nemaha Valley and Sabetha evened the Panthers' record at 2-2
Girls basketball --- Josie Pahmahmie scored 38 points and Nicole Burdiek had 15 rebounds in Royal Valley's 0-3 start.
Santa Fe Trail
Boys basketball --- Santa Fe Trail is 2-1 with wins over Wellsville (65-59) and Immaculata (61-45) and a loss to Basehor- Linwood. Ryan Roberts is averaging 15 points per game and both he and Craig Bourne scored 14 in the win over Immaculata.
"We are using a nine-man rotation right now," coach Brian Luther said. "Practices are very competitive at this point."
Tuesday's game with KC Piper was snowed out and will be played Dec. 21.
