AREA HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK
Burlingame
Boys basketball --- Burlingame dropped a 93-26 decision to Valley Falls on Tuesday, getting eight points from Bob Kendall.
Holton
Boys basketball --- Holton got 14 points from Robert Wilson and 13 from Matt Schirmer in a 67-46 win over Effingham that moved the Wildcats' record to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in Big Seven League play.
Girls basketball --- The Wildcats bounced back from their first loss to beat Effingham 44-31. Jackie Wilson scored 19 and Erin Morris had 10.
Jackson Heights
Boys basketball --- The Cobras fell to 2-3 with a 77-60 loss Tuesday to Midway-Denton. Ross Rieschick scored 10.
Girls basketball --- Midway-Denton kept the Cobras winless, taking a 69-26 victory. Heights (0-5) had no player score more than six points in the loss.
Jefferson West
Boys basketball --- After a 3-0 start, the Tigers dropped their second straight in Big Seven League play with a 61-52 loss to Royal Valley on Tuesday. Dave Jensen scored 12 points and Adam Petesch added 11. Ivan Gibeson leads the Tigers in scoring at 13.8 points per game and Jensen checks in at 11.8 per contest. Jefferson West's game with Hiawatha that was postponed last Friday will be made up Jan. 8.
"We have dug ourselves big holes early in the last two games, but rallied back in the fourth quarter of each only to fall short," Tiger coach Larry Latimer said. "We must use Christmas break to re-focus and find a way to play consistently well the entire game."
Girls basketball --- The Tigers improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in league play with a 44-41 win over winless Royal Valley. Emily Foster led the way with 11 points.
Lyndon
Boys basketball --- The Tigers got 14 points from Tim Cox, 13 from Jake Loveless and 11 from Aaron Bilyeu in a 64-46 win over Williamsburg. Lyndon improved to 4-1 with the win and returns to play Jan. 5 against Lebo --- both teams unbeaten in league play.
Girls basketball --- Lyndon moved over the .500 mark to 3-2 with a 57-42 win over Williamsburg. Jamie Schmitz's 14 points were tops among 10 Tiger scorers.
Marais des Cygnes Valley
Boys basketball --- After beating Pomona 50-28 on Monday, the Trojans suffered a 67-38 loss to White City on Tuesday. MdCV trailed just 27-22 at halftime, but committed four straight turnovers to start the second half. Dusty Wise scored 12 and Jason White had 11.
Girls basketball --- The Trojans won games over Pomona (40-26) on Monday and White City (47-38) on Tuesday to improve to 5-1 on the season. Three players hit for double-figures against White City, led by Kristen Lichtenauer's 14.
Osage City
Boys basketball --- The defending Class 3A champions remained unbeaten (6-0) with a 71-49 thumping of Herington on Tuesday. Kyle Loschke and Josh Briggs each had 16 in the win, while Chris Pitts (13) and Daniel Flax (12) also reached double figures. All four are averaging in double-figures for the season as well. Pitts had a triple-double against Silver Lake with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals.
Girls basketball --- The Indians dropped their second straight game, falling to Herington 53-52. Rachel Richard scored 19 and Chloe Dayhoff added 13.
Rossville
Boys basketball --- Derek Dick scored 17, but it wasn't enough as Rossville fell to Riley County 59-45 on Tuesday. The Bulldogs trailed by one at the end of the first quarter, but gave up 21 second- quarter points to the Falcons.
Girls basketball --- Rossville dropped its second straight game, falling to Riley County 69-38. Lani Cooper's 17 paced the Bulldogs (3- 3).
Wrestling --- The Bulldogs finished runner-up to Chase County at the Kaw Valley Dual Tournament, beating Onaga on a tiebreaker. Rossville beat Hayden (32-22), Onaga (35-20) and St. Marys (48-12) and lost to Chase County (42-30) and Herington (45-28).
Three Bulldogs were tournament champions --- Cody Lambotte at 130 pounds, Josh Gentry at 140 and Travis VanVleck at 145. Matt Creeven (125) and Brian Braden (135) were runners-up, while Chris Graves (112) and Matt Heslet (145) took third. Lambotte is 11-0 on the season and Graves, Creeven and VanVleck all have nine wins.
Royal Valley
Boys basketball --- Behind 26 points from Justin Henry, the Panthers improved to 3-2 with a 61-52 win at Jefferson West. Royal Valley led 34-19 at halftime before Jeff West rallied.
Girls basketball --- The Panthers (0-5, 0-3) fell short in their bid for their first win, dropping a 44-41 decision to Jefferson West on Tuesday night. Josie Pahmahmie scored 10 points in the loss and is averaging 10.6 points per game this season.
Wrestling --- The Panthers won duals with Hiawatha (59-21) and Tonganoxie (39-36) on Tuesday. Jeremy Johnson (112), Josh Keehn (119), Joe Douglas (171) and Bobby Hegemann (215) all picked up two wins by pin. Michael Tollefsen (103) and J.D. Starks (125) won their only match, also getting forfeit wins.
Santa Fe Trail
Boys basketball --- Santa Fe Trail (3-1) finally got back into action and beat DeSoto 46-24. Brian Mott scored 10 for the Chargers, who had their last two games postponed by weather. The boys' game at KC Piper will be played today and the girls' game has been rescheduled for Jan. 17.
