AREA HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK
Holton
Wrestling --- Chad Gerhardt (140) and Ryan Phillips (145) claimed pins in Holton's 43-30 dual loss to Royal Valley on Tuesday. Shawn Ostertag (130) and Tate Maxwell (heavyweight) each had decision victories.
Jefferson West
Boys basketball --- Jefferson West fell twice in Big Seven League play, losing to Nemaha valley (56-52) and Maur Hill (48-46). Rodney Stueve came off the bench for 13 points on three 3-pointers against Nemaha Valley.
Girls basketball --- April Huddleston's 20 points keyed a 59-29 rout of Mt. St. Scholastica on Tuesday. Sheena Hill added 11 and leads the Tigers at 17.2 points per game, while also shooting 34 percent from 3-point range. Emily Foster averages 9.0 rebounds per game
Lyndon
Boys basketball --- The Tigers took a huge step toward winning their first Lyon County League title in five years with a 70-68 overtime win at Lebo last Friday. The Tigers also beat Pomona and are 7-1 overall and 5-0 in league play, holding a game lead on Marais des Cygnes Valley. Kenny Troutman's basket at the buzzer sent the Lebo game to overtime, while Caleb Knoernschild was one of five Tigers in double-figures. Tim Cox's 14 points were tops against Pomona.
"It was a good week of basketball for Lyndon," coach Doug Delay said. "(Lebo) was a great win on the road. It was a hard-fought game and both teams played extremely hard."
Marais des Cygnes Valley
Boys basketball --- Trojan Dusty Wise fell one assist shy of a triple-double in a 72-55 win over Flinthills. Wise had 17 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists and also had 16 points and 10 rebounds against Hartford. Jason White's 22 led the Flinthills' game.
Girls basketball --- It was a split week for the Trojans with a loss to Flinthills (37-36) and win over Hartford (44-42). The loss to Flinthills came at the buzzer. Kristen Lichtenauer sports averages of 10.8 points and 8.8 rebounds to lead the Trojans.
Osage City
Boys basketball --- The Indians had a pair of wild wins to go to 8- 0 on the season. Osage nipped Wabaunsee at the buzzer, getting a conventional three-point play from reserve Josh Lieber --- his only points of the game. The Indians dug a 13-0 hole against Baldwin on Tuesday, but hit 10 of 15 shots in the second half and pulled out a 49-40 win.
Rossville
Wrestling --- The Bulldogs placed seventh at their own tournament, scoring 66 points. Josh Gentry (140) and Travis VanVleck (145) both placed first at their weight, while Cody Lambotte (130) was third and Brian Braden (135) took fourth. Lambotte's loss was his first of the year against 14 wins. Gentry is 10-2 and VanVleck is 12-3. Four other Bulldogs have just three losses.
Royal Valley
Girls basketball --- Hattie Mitchell made the most of her first start, leading the team against Hiawatha. The Panthers picked up their first win of the season with a 41-35 victory over the Redskins before falling to Holton 44-26.
Wrestling --- Royal Valley won a pair of Big Seven League duals with Holton (43-30) and Maur Hill (40-3) on Tuesday. Michael Tollefson (103), Bobby Slocum (152) Robbie Smith (160), Joe Douglas (171) and Bobby Hegemann (215) all recorded a pair of pins, while 189- pounder Will Mitchell won both of his matches by decision. Josh Keehn (119) won his only match.
Santa Fe Trail
Boys basketball --- The Chargers picked up a pair of Kaw Valley League wins against Tonganoxie (54-49) and Perry-Lecompton (66-52) to go to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in league play. Craig Bourne had 18 points and seven steals against the Kaws, while five other Chargers hit double-figures in the two games. Ryan Roberts' 11-point average is tops on the squad.
"We had our best first half of the season against Perry," coach Brian Luther said. "I thought we were aggressive offensively."
Girls basketball --- Trail was 2-0 in league play to stay on the heels of Kaw Valley League leaders Immaculata and KC Piper. Brandi Lee scored 18 in a 40-38 win over Tonganoxie and added 15 in a 64-50 win over Perry-Lecompton. She also had four steals in each game and was a combined 13-of-19 at the line. Maggie Apodaca (14), Erika Kraus (11) and Janelle Arnold (10) also hit double figures against Perry.
"It was a great week for us," coach Brenda Dahl said. "Our game with Tongy was a real battle. We did not play well, but were able to fight through it and hold them off. That told us a lot about our team."
Wrestling --- The Chargers followed up Kaw Valley League dual wins over Lansing and Perry-Lecompton with a second-place finish at Saturday's Rossville Invitational, coming within 10 points of defending 3A champion Effingham. Jason Thompson (103), Brooke Bogren (112), Jeremy Connelly (130), Ryan Temple (152) and Ryan Babbitt (171) were runner-up finishers, while the Chargers also got thirds from Cole Betsworth (119), Travis McBurney (135) and Brian Averill (140) and a fourth from Troy Baird (145).
"I'm pleased that we placed nine out of the 10 that wrestled at Rossville in the top four," coach Regan Erickson said. "We have a big test ahead of us at Newton."
