Silver Lake

Boys basketball --- The Eagles picked up their first win of the season Tuesday night, beating Pleasant Ridge 51-48. Silver Lake jumped out to a 20-5 first-quarter lead and held on. Josh Phelps still leads the team at 9.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

St. Marys

Girls basketball --- St. Marys posted wins over Rock Creek (63- 50) and Jackson Heights (47-34) out of the break, improving to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the Mid-East League. Shannon Wild scored 17 against Heights, while Kyla Dotson had 18 against Rock Creek. Dotson is averaging 10.8 points and Wild averages 10.2.

Valley Falls

Boys basketball --- The Dragons improved to 8-0 with a 70-31 thumping of Mission Valley. Brian Gentry had 18 points and nine steals after getting a triple double 15 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Troy last Friday. Tyson Allen has come off the bench to replace Jordan Rider, who has mono, and scored 12 and 16 points in the two wins.

Wabaunsee

Wrestling --- Four Chargers placed third at the Herington Tournament --- Steven Hurla (145), Ben Eberwein (189), Jacob Simon (215) and Chris Eberwein (heavyweight). Ben Eberwein suffered his first loss of the year at the tourney and is now 9-1. Simon is 6-2 and Chris Eberwein is 8-5. Wabaunsee also beat St. Marys and tied Council Grove in duals and took seventh at Herington as a team.

Other Mid-East notes

Boys basketball --- Riley County upped its mark to 6-1 with wins over Silver Lake (69-53) and Abilene (71-68), the latter coming in overtime. Mike Nelson led the team in scoring in both games, 22 and 16, respectively, and four players were in double figures against Abilene. Jordy and Mike Nelson lead the team with 16-point scoring averages.

Girls basketball --- Amy VanGundy led Northern Heights to a pair of wins against Mission Valley (67-36) and Chase County (59-48), scoring 20 and 18, respectively. Charisse Symmonds scored 15 in both games and leads the Wildcats with 13 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.

Other Big Seven notes

Boys basketball --- Nemaha Valley leads the league with a 6-0 mark after picking up three wins to start the 2001 slate. Scott Carlson had two games of 20 and leads the Raiders at 13 points per game.

Girls basketball --- Hiawatha's Telisa Collins had 13 points and five steals in a 41-35 loss to Royal Valley and Kaysi Olsen had 10 rebounds in a 48-32 loss to Effingham. Collins leads the Redskins (1- 6, 0-5) at 10.3 points per game.

Wrestling --- Sabetha took sixth at the Rossville Tournament on Saturday, scoring 86 1/2 points. Matt Pyle was the Blue Jays' only champion, taking first at 135 pounds. Clinton White (119), Drew Streit (125) and Cory Tinklin (215) were runner-up finishers.

Other Lyon County notes

Boys basketball --- Olpe ran away with a pair of league wins against Burlingame (79-47) and Flinthills (91-52), getting big games from Tyler Schmidt in both. Schmidt had 19 points, 8 rebounds and 6 steals against Burlingame and came back with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals against the Mustangs. Devin Cole had games of 15 points and 13 boards and 19 points and seven assists, while Tim Nuessen's 22 points were tops against Flinthills.
