FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. --- Kansas distance runner Charlie Gruber ran to second place in the mile Saturday to highlight KU finishers at the NCAA Indoor track championships.

Gruber was clocked in 3 minutes, 58.51 seconds. Bryan Berryilll of Colorado State ran 3:56.84 to win the race.

The Kansas men placed eighth in the team standings with 20 points.

Kansas State junior Shadrack Kimeli finished fifth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:07.98. K-State placed in a tie for 44th with 4 points.

"Shadrack really did a great job," said Wildcat coach Cliff Rovelto. "He really ran well."

For the Wildcat women, senior Korene Hinds finished sixth in the mile with a time of 4:44.71. The Wildcats tied for 25th as a team with 9 points.

"It was a tough race," Rovelto said. "But all in all, I think it was a pretty good weekend."

In the cruelest possible way, Texas Christian lost the men's team championship.

The only way the Frogs could fail was to drop the baton in the 1,600-meter relay, and that's what happened when Anthony Amantine bumped into the back of Baylor's Bayano Kamani seconds after the first exchange.

"There's no way to adequately describe the disappointment," said TCU coach Monte Stratton.

TCU was one of the favorites in the event and only needed a seventh-place finish to outscore LSU. Instead, the Tigers' Alleyne Francique, with a 44.6-second leg, passed Baylor's Zsolt Szeglet in the final straight and LSU picked up 10 points for winning.

Amantine retrieved the baton and got back in the race, but precious seconds were lost and the Frogs wound up 12th in the event.

LSU finished with 34 points, one more than the Frogs and two more than Arkansas.

The Razorbacks, seeking their fifth straight Indoor title, were a contender until the 3,000 meters when the best their three runners could do was a seventh by Daniel Lincoln.

UCLA's strength in the field events helped the Bruins repeat in the women's division. Christina Tolson contributed 18 points with a first and second in the shot and weight throw. UCLA wound up with 53 1/2 points and South Carolina was second with 40.

"Track and field is track and field," said UCLA coach Jeanette Bolden.
