- Briefly in Topeka

- Zoo hours will change April 1 --- The Topeka Zoo will extend its visiting hours to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning April 1. The admission gate will close at 5 p.m. although the zoo grounds will remain open until 6 p.m. The hours will be in effect through Nov. 1.

Admission is $4.50 for adults, $3.50 for people 65 years old and older and $3 for children 3 to 12 years old. FOTZ members and children 2 and younger will be admitted free.

- Canine obedience classes offered --- Parks and Recreation of Topeka will offer dog obedience classes for dogs and puppies, as well as canine good citizenship classes beginning March 31 at Crestview Community Center, 4801 S.W. Shunga Road. A beginning dog obedience class for dogs 4 months old and older will be offered at 9 a.m. The canine good citizenship class will begin at 10 a.m.

The canine good citizenship class is for dogs 1 year old or older. It involves teaching 10 basic skills with a final examination during the last class. Students need to bring current rabies vaccination proof, a 6-foot leash and a brush or comb. Both classes are eight- week sessions and enrollment is limited in both classes.

The cost is $30 per dog for either class. For more information, call 272-8361.

- Seniors to meet --- The following seniors groups and organizations will meet in in the coming week:

- Goodyear Retirees --- Covered dish luncheon. Noon Friday, Goodyear Shelter House. All retirees and their spouses are welcome. Entertainment will be provided. Those attending should bring a covered dish, table service and a dessert. Information, 286-1811.

- Active Primetimers --- Luncheon meeting. 11:30 a.m. March 26, Holiday Inn Holidome, 605 S.W. Fairlawn Road. Program: Meals on Wheels, by Jane Metzger, executive director of the program. Reservations should be made by Thursday with Marjorie Huhs, 272- 8637, or Mary-Jane Shankland, 272-5759.

- Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Retired Employees Club --- Monthly meeting. 11:30 a.m. March 27, Sacred Heart Church Parish Hall, 312 N.E. Freeman. Program: Jones and Granger Attorneys. Menu: beef and noodles, mashed potatoes, vegetable, dinner roll and Angel Food cake. Information Maizie George, 232-3917. Reservations are due Saturday. Call Bud McCall, 266-7309.

- Meetings announced --- The following meetings are scheduled in the coming weeks:

- Topeka Chess Club --- Two meetings a week for those interested in playing chess. 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays at Burger King, S.W. 10th and Wanamaker Road, and 2 to 5 p.m. Saturdays at The Classic Bean Coffee Shop and Deli, 722 S. Kansas Ave. Information, Kit Beatty, 272- 9587.

- Beta Zeta Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International Sorority - -- Annual spring dinner out with husbands and friends. 6 p.m. March 26, Timberline Steakhouse and Grill, 1425 S.W. Wanamaker Road.

- Topeka Woman's Club --- Benefit card party with door prizes and a style show. Noon March 30, the Club House, 5221 S.W. West Drive. Cost, $6. A light lunch will be offered. Reservations are due by March 27. Call 273-6978.

- Student representatives wanted --- Pacific Intercultural Exchange is looking for volunteers to work with international students as representatives. The volunteers would match students with host families by finding common interests and lifestyles through an informal in-home meeting. Prospective host families are able to review student applications and select a match. There are no typical host families.

PIE places students in many types of families, including with single-parents, childless couples, retired couples and large families. For more information, call Linda Watson toll free, (800) 429-3914.

- Church will present musical --- The junior high choir of Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene will present the musical "IMAGE" on April 1 at the church, 3501 S.W. Wanamaker Road. There will be two performances, one during the 9:15 a.m. service and another during the 10:45 a.m. service, both directed by Margo Stewart.

- Snowball royalty crowned at Seaman High School --- Erin Lynne Broadbent and Matt Hawken were crowned Seaman High School Queen and King of Snowball in ceremonies at halftime of the Feb. 20 basketball game. Broadbent is the daughter of Brian and Pamela Broadbent. Hawken is the son of Ted and Glenda Hawken. Grandparents of the Royalty are Claud and Georgia Watkins, Darlene Broadbent and Bill and Lucy Broadbent.
