Bert Day Jr.

Bert "Eddie" E. Day Jr., 60, Topeka, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Day worked for the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway for 35 years. He was the crew technician in the Topeka office at the time of his death.

He was born Sept. 28, 1940, in Perryton, Texas, the son of Bert E. and Bernice Holland Day Sr. He had lived in Amarillo, Texas, before he moved to Topeka.

Mr. Day was a member of the Transportation Communications International Union. He also was active in the Capital City Barber Shop Men's Chorus, where he served as chorus manager. He attended Town and Country Christian Church.

He married Shirley Lewman on April 22, 1977, Amarillo, Texas. She survives.

Other survivors include his father, Bert E. Day Sr., Amarillo, Texas; a sister, Sandra Warehime, Amarillo, Texas; two brothers, Harry Day, Tracey, Calif., and Michael Day, Amarillo, Texas; and a daughter, Angela Story, Clayborne, Texas.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Town and Country Christian Church. Later services and burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery in Amarillo, Texas. Mr. Day will lie in state from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid- Town Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Heartspring of Wichita and sent in care of the Harmony Foundation, 6315 Harmony Lane, Kenosha, Wis., 53143.

Anna Belle Evans

Anna Belle Evans, 78, Topeka, died Monday, April 23, 2001, at a local hospice.

Mrs. Evans was a longtime government employee for the USDA, USGS and the GSA agencies.

She was born on June 25, 1922, in Valley Falls, to Roscoe and Anna Cline Rose. She moved to Topeka in 1945.

She married David D. Evans on July 24, 1970. He survives.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Fries, Topeka; two sons, Glen Holston and Galen Holston, both of Topeka; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow in Valley Falls Farrar Cemetery in Valley Falls. Mrs. Evans will lie in state at the funeral chapel from noon to 9 p.m. today where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m.

Francena Foltz

Francena S. Foltz, 84, Topeka, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at a Topeka hospital.

Services will be announced by Newcomer Family Funeral Home.

Mary Holvorson

Mary E. Holvorson, 83, Topeka, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at a Topeka nursing home.

Mrs. Holvorson and her husband farmed in Wabaunsee County for many years before retiring in 1987.

She was born Sept. 11, 1917, in Tyrone, Okla., the daughter of Walter C. and Melissa Surber Elliott. She graduated from high school in Oakley and earned a degree in accounting at Kansas State University, where she worked in the business office while a student.

Mrs. Holvorson was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church. She had attended Maple Hill Community Church while she lived in the community.

She married Marion Holvorson on Oct. 10, 1943, in Amarillo, Texas. He survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Angele Judd, Fort Wayne, Ind.; and two grandsons.

Mrs. Holvorson was cremated. No public memorial services are scheduled.

Opal Ottesen

Opal LaDell Ottesen, 81, Topeka, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at a Topeka nursing home.

Mrs. Ottesen worked for Atchison Leather Products for 25 years before she retired in 1979.

She was born Nov. 19, 1919, at Atchison, the daughter of Charles David and Nelle Hundley Gilliland. She was reared in Atchison and was a longtime Atchison resident. She later lived 18 years in Effingham before she moved to Topeka in 1979.

Mrs. Ottesen was a member of the Sunnyhill Thimble Club in Effingham and First Presbyterian Church in Topeka.

She married Merlin Emil Ottesen on March 5, 1948, in Fort Leavenworth. He survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Vicki Lancaster, Topeka, and Joyce White, Tecumseh; a sister, Ellen Freeman, Topeka; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Ottesen will lie in state after noon Friday at the funeral home where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m.

Delbert Shaver

Delbert Dean Shaver, 62, Tacoma, Wash., died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at his sister's home in Topeka.

Mr. Shaver served in the Air Force from 1956 to 1961 and was a jet aircraft mechanic assigned at Walker Air Force Base, N.M. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Washington state for 35 years before he retired in 1997. He had received many awards for outstanding service during his career with the Postal Service, including recognition for working more than 3,000 continuous days and never taking sick leave.
