Fair at Seaman High School will be on Monday. Ninth-graders from Logan and Northern Hills junior high schools will attend to learn about course offerings available to them as sophomores at SHS. Teachers from the industrial technology, journalism, theater, debate/ forensics, math, science, art, business, physical education, music, FACS, foreign language and agri-science departments will give presentations. Nearly 300 students are expected to attend.

Tours and a brief explanation of the block scheduling format for next year will be provided for all students.

Staff members not participating in the presentations will conduct regular classes for SHS students and will cover classes of presenters during their duty or conference periods, or will act as tour guides for the groups of freshmen who participate.

Chris Carlson, Seaman High School senior and son of Dan and Kim Carlson, has been selected as the Sunrise Optimist Student of the Month.

An "A" honor roll student for the past two years, Carlson also has been a Kansas Scholar Athlete and National Honor Society member for two years. He was a nominee to Boys State and Wendy's High School Heisman Award, and has been a "Who's Who in Sports" All-Star.

He participated in football for four years, basketball for three years, and baseball for four years. He was a member of the state championship baseball team of 2000.

Carlson is a member of the Math Club, SADD and the Seaman Bank.

He has signed a letter of intent to play baseball on a scholarship to Kansas State University, where he plans to major in business administration.

Ten music students at Seaman High School were selected for the Kansas Music Educators Association honor groups. They included the following:

Choir --- Lindsey Laird, Greg Myer, Adam Boutz, Gina Barker, John Fuston and Billy Clark.

Band --- Tracy Blackman, Alisha Gibb, Robert Gibbs and Joe Swann.

Departmental Students of the Month have been named at Seaman High School.

They are: Anke Martens, art; Angie Bohn, business; Jessica Rezac, debate; Danielle Phillips, FACS; Quinton Cook, foreign language; Chris Lockwood, industrial technology; Jenna Lechner, journalism; Johanna Mikucki, language arts; Angie Bohn, math; Billy Clark, music; Reid Hash, physical education; Andrea Broadbent, science; and Rebecca Meyer, social studies.

Six Seaman High School Choir members have been selected for the American Choir Directors Association's Honor Choir for an ACDA meeting in Houston, Texas. The choir is comprised of selected students from Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Arkansas and Missouri.

Those from SHS are Lindsey Laird, Greg Myer, John Fuston, Brian Ashinhurst, Adam Boutz and Clinton Jacob.

The Seaman High School Tri-M Music Honorary Society will be host for an Evening of Gala Entertainment featuring top entertainers from the Topeka Community at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The hostess will be Amy Lietz, newscaster for Channel 27. Special guests will include Lee Lassiter, Rhonda Lassiter, Nancy Epoch, Dan Linquist, Megan Linquist, Gary Stroud and Judy Coder. Coder, a trained opera singer, is a national yodeling champion.

Also to be featured are Seaman's Jazz Ensemble and Show Choir.

Tickets will be available for $10 at the door or from Tri-M members.

All proceeds from the event will go to Feed the Children.

One hundred seventeen Seaman High School students who attained the Kansas Standard of Excellence on state assessments taken last spring received certificates of recognition from the Kansas State Board of Education in a ceremony this month.

Sophomores took Kansas assessments in math and science, and juniors took assessments in reading and social studies.

Statewide, 8.3 percent of 11th-grade students reached the standard of excellence in reading, and 12.8 percent did so in social studies.

Also statewide, 12.9 percent of tenth-graders reached the standard of excellence in math, and 11.8 percent did so in science.

The Seaman High School spring musical that has been chosen for staging on March 7 to 9 is "Annie Get Your Gun."

All Seaman patrons are invited to the Athletic Booster Club Dance on Feb. 2 at the Sunrise Optimist Club building, north of the high school.

Hours will be 7 p.m. to midnight. Tickets, at $5 each, may be bought at the door or in advance at home games from Booster Club officers, or from Julie Jenson at 246-1131, or Mike and Rose Lott at 246-0651.

A disc jockey will play a variety of tunes. Light snacks and beverages will be provided. Items to be auctioned off will include memorabilia from all sports that have been autographed by Seaman athletes. There also will be a silent auction and raffle items.

The Seaman High School Vikings men's swim team has 20 members this year.

Eleven of them are returning from last year.

Eight varsity wrestlers have returned for this year's program coached by Dennis Switzky.

The team is led by seniors Greg Hanna, Michael Juarez, A.J. DeBacker, Brede Cowen, Patrick Allen, Tim Burrell and Tevor Sands.

Also, a strong nucleus of underclassmen consists of four juniors, eight sophomores and 17 freshmen. Six of the returnees were state qualifiers.
