Zack Bahr, a sixth-grader at Lyman Elementary School, was chosen to participate in the dedication of the new youth services area of the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library as exemplifying a good reader. He was accompanied by Kim Hibbert, the school's Title 1 reading teacher. First Lady Laura Bush visited the library for the dedication.

--- The Dawg

The Seaman High School Viking Band won third place in its performance in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio on Dec. 29.

The band performed its show for three judges. It joined seven other high school bands in performing a patriotic show that was learned in hours the day before.

Band members also toured the historic Alamo, shopped on the Riverwalk and visited the marketplace. The latter is a Hispanic community that features music, shopping and food.

Students of the month at Logan Junior High School were Brittany Rahm and Monte Jones, seventh grade; Shelby Schmidt and Trevor McCullah, eighth grade; and Shafreah Pfannenstiel and Jordan Christian, ninth grade.

Seventh-graders at Logan Junior High School who have reached their Accelerated Reader goal for the first semester are: Elizabeth Bervert, Charles Brading, Craig Johnson, Rikki Kluber, LeAnn Meyer, Jesse Mohler, Kristen Pfannenstiel, Kim Seaver, Michelle Welch- Greene and Danielle Yingling.

Kyle Wells, a sixth-grade student at Indian Creek Elementary School, and Principal Kim Crooks attended the recent dedication of the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library youth department.

U.S. First Lady Laura Bush and Kansas First Lady Linda Graves were guests at the dedication.

One student and one adult from every school in Shawnee County had the opportunity to participate in a "Grow a Library" project. If the school read at least 250 books, the project organizers found a sponsor to donate a tree to the library in the name of the school. Indian Creek's tree is located on 10th Street. It is tree No. 3.

Lyman Elementary School will have its annual chili feed on Feb. 21. Serving will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be no advance ticket sales.

The sixth grade at East Indianola Elementary School is selling candy bars to raise money for classroom funds and end of the year projects.

The candy bars are available from any sixth-grade student.

Silver Lake USD 372

Silver Lake Striders summer track club is looking for volunteers to help coach during May and June. Practices are from 4:30 to about 5:30 p.m. on Mondays. Track meets are on Wednesdays and some Saturdays. Volunteers will work with children age 8 and older. Interested persons may call Kelly Lampe at 582-0556.

December Employees of the Month have been named. Brad Womack and Joann Wolf were named certified Employees of the Month, and Clara Menhusen was named non-certified Employee of the Month.

Scholars Bowl competition has resumed for the Silver Lake teams.

Future competition dates for the varsity team will be: today at Topeka West, Saturday at Highland Community College invitational, Monday at Rossville and Jan. 31 at Horton regional competition.
