Tori Lewis and Jorey Reed, both sixth-grade students at Pleasant Hill Elementary School, were winners in the annual essay contest of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority of Topeka.

They were recognized at a program Feb. 23. Tori's essay was called "Rosa Parks: The Woman Who Changed History." Jorey's essay was "African-American Hero --- Langston Hughes."

Pleasant Hill Elementary students from kindergarten through third grade will present their spring program, a musical "E-I-E-I-Oops!" on Tuesday in the Seaman High School auditorium. The program will begin at 7 p.m.

Several East Indianola Elementary students have advanced to new levels in the Phonics Festival.

Jordan Dietrick and Christian Retna have reached level three, Jordan Dietrick and Dylan Dozier have reached levels four and five, Justin Carswell has reached levels seven and eight, Jesse Gfeller has reached level eight, Austin Donald has reached levels eight and nine, and Mykol Barksdale and Gage Purvis have reached level 10.

Several students also have reached new bonus levels: Gage Purvis and Kyle Taylor have reached bonus level one, Mykol Barksdale has reached bonus levels one through three, Harley Olson and Thomas and James Vincent have reached bonus level seven, and Taylor Mitchell and Mercedes Rosebrough have reached bonus levels eight through 10.

North Fairview Elementary sixth-grade students of the KonPost room celebrated Valentine's Day by painting tiles to send to New York in commemoration of the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

The tile was to be fired by Potwin Pottery and sent for a display across the street from St. Vincent's Hospital where many of the victims were treated. Students painted pictures of New York skyscrapers, hearts, and many red, white and blue symbols on the tiles.

The project was made possible by John Logan and his family.

West Indianola Elementary students are conducting a survey about games people play.

The students have completed surveys on elementary students in grades four through six from throughout the Seaman district. Now they are beginning adult surveys and need people to complete them by going online to www.usd345.com and going to the West Indianola Web page. To the bottom right of the screen, participants should click where it says "Favorite Games Survey."

If the survey form won't send, participants should print it and send the completed survey to Ms. Billings class, West Indianola, 4201 N.W. Brickyard Road, Topeka, KS 66618.

Lyman Elementary School is looking for Saturday volunteers to help prepare the school library for automation. The helpers are needed from 9 a.m. to noon on March 16, 23 and 30. All books should be checked in during this time so they will be included in the process. The school is relying on the bookmobile during the month of March. To volunteer, call Mrs. Brien at 575-8770 any weekday morning except Thursdays.

Matthew Allison, a senior at Jefferson West High School, was chosen as a member of the Kansas Music Educators Association's statewide honor choir, which gave a concert Feb. 23 at Wichita's Century II Convention Center.

Matthew was among 500 high school students who were chosen from audition tapes to be a member of either the statewide honor band, orchestra, choir or jazz groups to participate in the 65th annual KMEA in-service workshop Feb. 21-23.

His parents are Toni and Ernest Allison, of Meriden.

Jefferson West Middle School is hosting a New To You Sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the school's gym in Meriden at 210 N. Miller. Items for sale will include furniture, electronics, household items, clothing and miscellaneous items. Concessions also will be available.

Silver Lake USD 372

Children who will be age 5 on or before Aug. 31 will be screened for kindergarten during the annual roundup April 5 at Silver Lake Elementary. Parents may call the school at 582-4081 to sign up a child for the kindergarten roundup.

There will be no school for the kindergarten class or Mrs. Radefeld's preschool class on April 5 because of the event.

Valley Falls USD 338

Stan Drinkard is the newest Valley Falls Accelerated Reader 1000 Point Club member.

Also, Christie Allen is completing her fifth year of managing the Accelerated Reader store.

Books will be for sale at a portable book store during the Book Fair next week in the Valley Falls Elementary library.

Students will bring home a list of books that will be available. Proceeds from the Book Fair will support the Accelerated Reader store.

Book Fair hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Monday; 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; and 8 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. on March 15.

The varsity and junior varsity Knowledge Bowl teams from Valley Falls finished a strong season on Feb. 2.
