McLouth USD 342

Kendall Patterson, McLouth Elementary School's entrant in the Jefferson County Spelling Bee, took fourth place and was just one word out of qualifying for a U.S. Savings Bond.

McLouth Elementary School had a drive for non-perishable food items that resulted in the collection of 1,072 donated items. Mrs. Bradford's kindergarten class collected the most items --- 274 --- so they enjoyed an ice cream party sponsored by Girl Scout Troop 715. The food drive was a community service project.

Lisa Smelser, a McLouth High School sophomore, will spend two weeks at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico this summer as the recipient of the 2002 Student Challenge Award sponsored by the Durfee Foundation and Earthwatch Institute.

Lisa's team of researchers will study Transient Phenomena in Astrophysics with Dr. Donald Casperson. Lisa is one of 76 students who will work in teams of six to eight students in 10 locations around the U.S. and in the Caribbean.

Earthwatch Institute review board chose students for these projects who have demonstrated a passionate commitment to the arts and sciences, and who reflect curiosity, intelligence and imagination.

Lisa was nominated by Kathy Saving, her gifted facilitator. In her application for the award, Lisa was asked to describe an invention that she would like to make and explain why it would be important.

"A Night under the Stars" will be theme for the McLouth Junior- Senior Prom on Friday, May 3, at the Alvamar Country Club in Lawrence.

The reception will begin at 7 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. The program will be at approximately 8:15 p.m. and the dance will begin at 8:45 p.m.

Invitations were going into the mail early this month to all juniors and seniors in good standing (those who have met all past and present dues and other financial obligatins). Attendees who plan to bring an out-of-school guest must complete and turn in a form with their RSVPs.

Persons leaving the building at the prom will not be readmitted, and no one will be admitted 30 minutes after the dance has begun.

Dinner for all invited guests is paid for by the junior class for all invited guests.

The second annual McLouth After Prom Party will be at the Royal Crest Bowling Alley in Lawrence after the prom on May 3.

The party will start at 12:15 a.m. and end at 3 a.m. All students and their dates who attended the prom may attend to party, which is designed to give the students a fun and safe activity after prom.

The party is being sponsored by junior and senior class sponsors, along with concerned parents of the junior class. The cost to students will be $5. There will be no charge for students' dates. Sponsors are seeking donations to help cover the costs. Costs include $550 for bowling the entire evening, $300 for free games and laser tag, and two security guards on duty at all times.

All students attending will receive a door prize. All students will be expected to stay until 3 a.m. Any student wanting to leave before 3 a.m. will have to call their parents for permission. McLouth Elementary School has selected as a fund-raising, recycling program the collection of empty inkjet printer cartridges.

Money raised by the project will go to help the Bulldog Reading Store.

The buyer of the printer cartridges will pay $2 for some specific cartridges, and $1 for others. A list of the desired cartridges was printed in The Bulldog Bulletin.

Empty cartridges may be collected from home or business printers and brought to the school collection site. To prevent leakage, collectors are advised to place the cartridges in resealable plastic bags to prevent any leakage. The school will send off the cartridges in lots of 50.

McLouth Library now is able to hire a librarian for 17 hours a week.

Library hours are 7-9 p.m. Mondays and 9-12 a.m. Saturdays. For information about the position, call Carol Brewer at 796-6287.

Seaman USD 345

The Seaman High School Prom will be from 8-11 p.m. Saturday, May 4, in the ballroom of the Ramada Inn Downtown. An Afterglow party will be held at the high school after the prom.

Two planning meetings for the Afterglow remain --- April 21 and 28. No tickets will be sold at the door the night of Afterglow. Many opportunities are being given to students to buy tickets in advance.

Donations for the Afterglow are welcomed. They may be sent to Seaman High School, c/o Colin Cathey, 4850 N.W. Rochester Road, Topeka 66617.
