Herbert Johnson
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- Herbert K. Johnson, 78, Sioux Falls, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at a Sioux Falls hospital.
He was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Mayetta, Kan., and grew up on a farm near Mayetta. He graduated from Mayetta High School in 1941.
Mr. Johnson was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II as well as an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He retired from the Air Force in 1963. He served in Europe during World War II and spent four tours of duty overseas --- two tours in Europe and two tours in Japan. He was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal with four bronze stars, the German Occupation Ribbon, American Defense Ribbon and the Japan Occupation Ribbon and other medals.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Pesall, Sioux Falls; a son, Herbert K. Johnson Jr., Spiritwood, N.D.; a brother, Donald Johnson, Webb, Kan.; two sisters, Anna Mae Vance, Tacoma, Wash., and Christina Fritchman, Stillwater, Okla.; two grandchildren; a great-grandson; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to service time at the funeral home.
Judy Weekes
Doreen Coleman
Doreen Maud Coleman, 74, Topeka, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at a Topeka hospital.
Mrs. Coleman had worked for the Kansas Corporation Commission and later for Topeka State Hospital until she retired in 1992.
She was born Jan. 17, 1928, in Northampton, England, the daughter of Robert and Maud Elizabeth Block York. She came to the United States in 1946 and had lived in Roswell, N.M. She lived in Cambridge, England, before she moved to Topeka in 1962.
Mrs. Coleman was active in the YWCA aquatic exercise group.
She married Don Coleman on Jan. 17, 1946, in Northampton, England. He survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Donald Coleman, Arlington, Va., and David Coleman and Richard Coleman, both of Topeka; two sisters, Nancy and Dorothy, both in England; and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Coleman was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Coleman, in 1998.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Newcomer Family Funeral Home.
Roland Levy
Roland Edward Levy, 38, Topeka, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at his home.
Mr. Levy was employed by Southwestern Bell, and he had been a co- owner of Egos Salon and Day Spa.
He was born Nov. 12, 1963, in Fort Riley, the son of George and Elfriede Levy. He was raised in Junction City and graduated from Junction City High School in 1982, where he had been active in wrestling, football, baseball and band. He earned a Navy ROTC scholarship to The University of Kansas and graduated with a bachelor's degree in business in 1987.
Survivors include his mother, Elfriede Levy, Junction City; a half sister, Kim Levy, in Connecticut; a brother, George Levy Jr., in Connecticut; and a companion, Mark Sowders, Topeka.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Levy will lie in state at the funeral chapel after 1 p.m. today, where a rosary recited at 6:30 p.m. will be followed by visitation from 7 to 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Helping Hands Humane Shelter, 2625 N.W. Rochester Road, Topeka, 66617; or to the American Cancer Society, 1315 S.W. Arrowhead Road, Topeka, 66604.
Bernice Michael
Bernice E. Michael, 86, Topeka, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at a Topeka nursing home.
She was born March 19, 1916, in Reserve, the daughter of Cassius and Rose E. McEndree Birdsley. She lived most of her life in Topeka and worked as a seamstress in her home for many years.
She married Charles E. Michael on Dec. 31, 1935, in Lawrence. He died Nov. 15, 1998.
Survivors include a son, Gary C. Michael, Maple Hill; a daughter, Sharon R. Streeter, Topeka; a sister, Normalou Massey, Euless, Texas; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Michael will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at the funeral chapel, where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m.
Ralph Preston
Ralph R. Preston, 82, Topeka, died Tuesday, June 12, 2002, at a Salina hospital
Services will be announced by Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel.
A.J. Vehige
A.J. Vehige, 88, Topeka, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at his home.
Services will be announced by Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.
Judy Weekes
Judy A. Weekes, 54, Topeka, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at a Kansas City, Kan., hospital.
She was born Aug. 7, 1947, in Salina, the daughter of Arthur E. and Ella Estelle Nickelson Hoover. She was raised in Lyndon and graduated from Lyndon High School in 1965.
Mrs. Weekes was employed at First Congregational Church in Topeka for more than 13 years.
Mrs. Weekes was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
She married Dennis D. Weekes on May 4, 1968. He survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Aaron Weekes and Russell Weekes, both of Topeka; her parents, Topeka; and a sister, Lynda Lippert, Lyndon.
A Memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery at Paxico. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. today at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home.
