James Allen
HORTON --- James D. "Jimmie" Allen, 70, Horton, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at a Horton hospital.
Services will be announced by Chapel Oak Funeral Home in Horton. Burial will be at Horton Cemetery.
Alvy Beer
SABETHA --- Alvy J. Beer, 91, Sabetha, died Thursday, June 13, 2002, at a Sabetha nursing home.
Services will be announced by Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha.
Jessica Clement
HORTON --- Jessica "Hannah" Clement, 18, Horton, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at her home.
She was born Sept. 28, 1983, in Manhattan, the daughter of C. Richard "Rick" and Debra J. Clement. She graduated from Solid Rock Home School.
Miss Clement was a member of the Church of the Lord of Jesus Christ and the church youth group in Horton, the Community 4-H Club in Effingham and the Hiawatha Area Home School Group.
Survivors include her parents, Rick and Debra Clement, Horton; a brother, Caleb Levi Clement, Whiting; and three sisters, Charlie Bayles, Horton, Tanisha Walker and J. Sage Clement, both of the home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Horton. Graveside services will be private. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Voice of the Martyrs, to the Effingham 4-H Club, to the Horton Outpatient Oncology Department or to The University of Kansas Medical Center School Room and sent in care of the mortuary.
Randall Conrad
LAWRENCE --- Randall E. "Randy" Conrad, 49, formerly of Lawrence, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at an Overland Park hospital.
Mr. Conrad owned and operated Conrad Electric from 1995 to 2001. He was a master electrician and had worked at Williams Air Force Base in Mesa, Ariz., McBride Electric in Kansas City, Kan., and at I.T. Works in Mesa.
He was born Dec. 6, 1952, in Lawrence, the son of Jack E. and Edna Jones Conrad. He was a lifelong resident of Lawrence before he moved to Mesa a short time ago.
Mr. Conrad was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers No. 226 in Topeka, Abdallah Shrine of Kansas City, Kan., Lawrence Shrine Club and Mount Oread Aerie No. 309 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Lawrence.
He married Linda Ellis on June 3, 1977, in Lawrence. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Christina Marie Conrad, Lawrence; a son, Randall E. Conrad Jr., Mesa; his mother and stepfather, Edna Conrad and A.W. Shackelford, Lawrence; a brother, Lenny Conrad, Lawrence; a sister, Jacque Conrad, Tyler, Texas; three stepbrothers, Brad Shackelford, Perry, and Brett Shackelford and Brian Shackelford, both of Eudora; and a grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Educational Fund for Randall E. Conrad Jr. or to the American Heart Association and sent in care of the mortuary.
Elizabeth Craven
VALLEY FALLS --- Elizabeth Mildred Craven, 86, Valley Falls, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at a Nortonville care facility.
Mrs. Craven taught elementary school in Olathe from 1955 to 1981. She also had taught in rural schools in Johnson and Miami counties from 1935 to 1955.
She was born Nov. 21, 1915, near Altoona, the daughter of John and Frances Lewis Funk. She moved to Olathe with her family in 1920 and graduated from Olathe High School in 1933. She earned a teaching certificate at Emporia State Teachers College in 1935 and a bachelor's degree in education from Ottawa University in 1961. She moved to Valley Falls in 1986.
Mrs. Craven was a member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the PEO Sisterhood in Valley Falls, Delta Kappa Gamma, the National Education Association, Kansas Education Association and the Johnson County Retired Teachers Association.
She married Kenneth Craven on June 30, 1938, in Muncie. He died in 1964. Mrs. Craven also was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Hazelwood, on June 25, 1993.
Survivors include two sons, John Craven, Cape Coral, Fla., and Ed Craven, Blue Springs, Mo.; and two grandsons.
Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. June 29 at Valley Falls United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Maryville Township Cemetery in Hillsdale.
Memorial contributions may be made to Linwood Place Assisted Living, 1509 Linn St., Valley Falls, 66088; or to the charity of the donor's choice and sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls.
Sister Karen Heideman
ATCHISON --- Sister Karen Heideman, 61, Atchison, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002.
Sister Heideman served as a principal in Mount St. Scholastica schools and was a board member of the Mount Community Center in Atchison. She also served on the Senate and the formation team for Mount St. Scholastica.
She was born Jan. 7, 1941, the daughter of Henry and Catherine Henry Heideman. She was reared on a farm near Baileyville and had lived in Corning before she entered Mount St. Scholastica on June 25, 1959. She made monastic profession on Dec. 28, 1960.
