School supplies donations accepted

Community America Credit Union, along with Let's Help Inc. and the Topeka Rescue Mission, will sponsor a Stuff the Bus event to collect school supplies for are school children. Area residents are asked to donate school supplies for area youth who are unable to afford new items for school. The items will be accepted beginning today and continue through Aug. 3 at the two Community America Credit Union locations in Topeka, 1129 S. Kansas Ave. and 5011 S.W. 29th.

I-470 bridge traffic to be disrupted

The westbound Interstate 470 bridge over Interstate 70 will be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday while temporary concrete barriers are being placed on the bridge. The barriers will restrict traffic to one lane while repair work in being done.

A detour will direct traffic around the bridge Tuesday. After the barriers have been installed, the roadway will be reduced to one lane, and the speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph.

Basket dealers to raise money

Independent Longaberger Co. associates will have an event Saturday to raise funds for breast cancer research. The event will take place at the Thornton Place Retirement Residence, 2901 S.W. Armstrong.

Each participating consultant will donate a percentage of her earnings to breast cancer research. For more information and details about the event, call Karen Stadler, 339-2230.

Registration open for Peace Camp

The Topeka Center for Peace and Justice is accepting registration for Peace Camp 2002, scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 29 to Aug. 2 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 2021 S.W. 29th. This year's theme is "Children as Peacemakers." The camp will include breakfast and lunch.

Campers will use art, music, storytelling, crafts, recreation and cooking projects to focus on the theme. They also will learn about conflict resolution, negotiation and other problem-solving techniques.

Children 6 to 12 years old are welcome to register by calling 232- 4388. The fee is $20 per child. Scholarships are available.

Topeka youth earns volunteer award

Austin Tiffany, of Topeka, was chosen for a Kohl's Department Store Volunteerism Award in June for her efforts to organize a bake sale to benefit the Red Cross 9-11 Fund. Tiffany received a $50 Kohl's gift card for the honor and was entered into a field of 741 in regional competition, in which 76 winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The department store will name 10 finalists in August who will each receive a $5,000 scholarship.

Quartet to perform in Topeka

The Joy Quartet of Pensacola Christian College, Fla., will present a musical program at 6 p.m. Friday at Topeka Baptist Church, S.W. 45th and Gage Boulevard. The presentation will include an informative video introduction to the college. The public is invited, and refreshments will be served.

Keep America Beautiful luncheon set

Keep America Beautiful-Topeka Shawnee County will have its 25th anniversary luncheon, "Celebrating 25 Years," July 17 at Reynold's Lodge, 3315 S.E. Tinman Circle, Lake Shawnee. Golf tournament to benefit research

The American Cancer Society's Golf Championship to raise funds to fight cancer and fund research will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. July 22 at Shawnee Country Club, 913 S.E. 29th.

The championship is open to men and women, and winners will have the opportunity to advance to state and national championship play.

The entry fee is $125 per person or $500 per team, which includes green fees, cart and lunch at 11:30 a.m. For information, or to register, call the American Cancer Society's 24-hour help line, (800) ACS-2345, or visit www.cancer.org.

Sendak next author for Storytime

Barnes and Noble Booksellers, 6130 S.W. 17th, will present "Where the Wild Things Are," by Maurice Sendak, during Storytime at 11 a.m. Saturday. The event will include a special guest appearance by the Wild Thing. Parents are encouraged to bring a camera.

Handwriting analysis topic of lecture

Mickey Burns will talk about the benefits of handwriting analysis during a program on graphotherapy at 7 p.m. Friday at Barnes and Noble Booksellers, 6130 S.W. 17th. The public is invited. For more information, call Shelly Graham, 273-4119 or 273-9600.

Local churches plan Bible schools

- Western Hills Baptist Church, 2900 S.W. Auburn Road, will have vacation Bible school from 6:30 to 9 p.m. July 14 to 18. All children from 3 years old through grade six are invited. The theme will be "Amazon Outfitters, On Expedition with the One True God." Built around an Amazon adventure expedition the week will be full of Bible stories, crafts, music, recreation and rain-forest related refreshments. For information, Call 478-3080.

- First Southern Baptist Church, S.W. 19th and Gage, also will have "Amazon Outfitters, On Expedition with the One True God," Vacation Bible School 9 a.m. to noon July 15 through 19. Activities include crafts, missions, music, games, snacks and more. Children who have completed grades kindergarten through the sixth grade are invited. There is no cost, but registration should be made by calling the church, 272-0443.
