Anthony Cianciarulo

FORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. --- Anthony Ray "Tony" Cianciarulo, 53, died July 5, 2002, in Fort Charlotte after a long illness.

Mr. Cianciarulo worked for GT Manufacturing in Kansas City until he retired in 2000.

He was born July 7, 1948, to Bennie and Lois Hitt Cianciarulo.

He married Margaret Landon in 1970. They were divorced.

Survivors include a son, Nicklaus Cianciarulo, Topeka, and a daughter, Anna Cianciarulo, Kansas City.

A funeral Mass will be at 7:55 a.m. Aug. 5 at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Topeka. Relatives and friends will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Deauville Clubhouse, 5436 S.W. 12th St. Terrace.

Memorial contributions may be made to Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1800 S.W. Stone Ave., Topeka, 66604; or to the American Cancer Society, 1315 S.W. Arrowhead Road, Topeka, 66604.

Duana Elder

WICHITA --- Duana Berneice Grant Elder, Wichita, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, in Wichita.

Mrs. Elder was a licensed funeral director in Arkansas City for many years before she retired in the 1970s. She later was a receptionist for Dr. Thomas Coleman in Wichita for a few years and she worked at the Gerard House and the American Red Cross.

She was born in Arkansas City, to Clifford D. and Carrie Bernice Arnett Grant. She moved to Wichita from Arkansas City about 20 years ago.

Mrs. Elder was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Arkansas City, Business and Professional Women, Victory Chapel No. 151, the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution, the ladies auxiliary to Spencer Ralston Post No. 1254 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and World War I Auxiliary No. 1204.

She married A. Lee Elder on Aug. 30, 1944, in California.

Survivors include three sons, Grant Elder, Wichita, Roderic Elder, Topeka, and Clifford Elder, Park City; a daughter, Leanna B. Tyler, Arkansas City; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Elder was preceded in death by a son, Wilbur Elder.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Chapel of Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Arkansas City.

Oxford Funeral Service in Oxford is in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Fike

HAYS --- Phyllis J. Fike, 62, Topeka, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, in Finzel, Md.

Mrs. Fike had been employed as the religious education secretary at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Topeka.

She was born Dec. 26, 1939, in Hays, the daughter of Julius and Virginia Younger Engel.

Survivors include her husband, Gary R. Fike, Topeka; a son, Aaron R. Fike, Flanders, N.J.; a daughter, Dawn M. Fike, Fredericksburg, Va.; two brothers, Julius Engel and Francis "Butch" Engel, both of Hays; a sister, Anita Kreutzer, Glendale, Colo.; and a grandson.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will be in Finzel, Md., Cemetery. A parish vigil service will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Garrett County or to the Finzel, Md., Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund and sent in care of the funeral chapel.

Dr. Norman Gale

SAN DIEGO --- Dr. Norman Arthur Gale, 88, San Diego, died Thursday, June 13, 2002 in San Diego.

Dr. Gale practiced medicine for 63 years before he retired. He spent 54 years of his career on the staff at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego. He also served as an Army physician with the 77th Evacuation Hospital in the European Theater. He also served with the 150th, 3rd and 9th Armies and the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions in England, Sicily and Northern Africa. He landed at Utah Beach at Normandy, served at St. Mere Iglise and and also saw action in Paris, at the Battle of the Bulge and in Germany.

He was born May 1, 1914, in Topeka, where he earned the Eagle Scout Award as a Boy Scout and was part of the crew that won two national championships on a Sea Scout ship under skipper Dr. William Menninger. He earned a bachelor's degree at Washburn University and earned a medical degree in 1940 at The University of Kansas Medical School. He served an internship at the University of San Diego Medical Center and did his residency at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

Survivors include his wife, Linda, San Diego; a daughter, Norma Wetze, San Diego; a son, Steve Gale, in Kentucky; a brother, Bernard Gale; a sister, Virginia; and six grandchildren.

Memorial services with a military detail were June 17, 2002 at Sally Lynn Chapel, Greenwood Memorial Park in San Diego.

Inurnment will be at a later date.

Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary in San Diego is in charge of arrangements.

Leo Gamble

SPRINGFIELD, Colo. --- Leo E. Gamble, 89, Springfield, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at a Springfield hospital.

Mr. Gamble worked for Santa Fe Railway for 38 years before he retired in 1975. He began his career as a track laborer and retired as track supervisor. His job stationed him in Keyes, Okla., Johnson, Kan., Dodge City, Kan., and Springfield.

He was born Dec. 23, 1912, in Greensburg, Kan., to William E. and Nellie Prock Gamble.
