Marvin Bailey

LAWRENCE --- Marvin J. Bailey, Lawrence, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at his home.

Services will be announced by Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

Alton Carey

PRINCETON --- Alton F. Carey, 73, Princeton, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at an Ottawa hospital.

Mr. Carey had been a farmer and laborer as a young man. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and served five years in the Army Reserves. He operated heavy equipment and was a welder for Smith and Loveless Co. in Lenexa for 25 years before retiring in 1992. He later was a part-time van driver for the Franklin County Senior Center.

He was born Aug. 8, 1929, in Princeton, the son of H. Dean and Alma Alnora Morris Carey. He was raised near Princeton and attended rural schools in the Princeton area.

Mr. Carey was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and Warren Black Post No. 60 of the American Legion, both in Ottawa.

He married Phyllis Jean Petersen Rauch on Dec. 31, 1952, in Keswick, Iowa. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Michael A. Carey, Princeton, and Dale L. Carey, Chanute; a stepson, Floyd Arnold Rauch, Clever, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Carey was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Sandra Arlene Rauch.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church in Ottawa. Burial with full military honors will be at the Princeton Cemetery. Mr. Carey will lie in state after 8 a.m. Friday at Lamb- Roberts-Heise Funeral Home in Ottawa, where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m.

Contributions may be made to Faith Lutheran Church and sent in care of the funeral home.

Marjorie Griffith

MANHATTAN --- Marjorie "Midge" L. Pallady Griffith, 77, Manhattan, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at a Manhattan hospital.

She was born Jan. 4, 1925, in Culver City, Calif. She moved to Manhattan in 1993.

Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home in Manhattan is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Herman

Joseph Koch

LEAVENWORTH --- Sister Herman Joseph Koch, 93, Leavenworth, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at Ross Hall at the Mother House in Leavenworth.

Sister Koch had been a nurse and pastoral assistant. She served in hospitals in Kansas City, Kan., and Leavenworth, as well as in Montana, Colorado, Wyoming and Nevada.

She served as pastoral assistant at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Kansas City, Kan., from 1978 to 1995.

She was born June 16, 1909, in Clyde, the daughter of Nicholas and Cordelia Menard Koch. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Leavenworth. She entered the religious community of Sisters of Leavenworth in June 1934 and made her profession of vows in June 1936. She earned a nursing degree at Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

Survivors include three sisters, Rosa Brownell, Holton, Florence Fischer, Beattie, and Cecilia Deneault, Clyde; and three brothers, Herman Koch, Clyde Koch and Aloysius Koch, all of Salina.

Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at Annunciation Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Retirement Fund, 4200 S. 4th, Leavenworth, 66048.

Michael LeClair

CONCORDIA --- Michael S. LeClair, 50, formerly of Concordia, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, in North Las Vegas.

Services will be announced by Chaput Mortuary in Clyde.

Margaret Logan

SALINA --- Margaret Elizabeth Logan, 89, Salina, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at a Salina retirement community.

Mrs. Logan and her husband owned and operated Logan Repair Shop in Miltonvale from 1937 to 1976. They also farmed east of Miltonvale until 1976. Mrs. Logan wrote the Springmound News for the Clay Center Dispatch and the Miltonvale Record newspapers for more than 50 years.

She was born Sept. 8, 1912, in Clay County, to Samuel and Jessie DeYoung Stevenson. She was raised in Idana and was a lifelong Clay County resident. She moved to Miltonvale about 25 years ago.

Mrs. Logan was a life member of First Presbyterian Church in Idana and a member of the Miltonvale Christian Women's Fellowship, Extension Homemakers Unit, Our Friendly Circle Neighborhood Club and Miltonvale Senior Citizens.

She married J. Floyd Logan on May 4, 1934. He died in 1976.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Kerr, Salina; and two granddaughters.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Idana. Burial will be at the Idana Cemetery. Mrs. Logan will lie in state from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home in Clay Center.

Contributions may be made to the Idana Presbyterian Church or the Miltonvale Senior Citizens Center and sent in care of the funeral home.

Evella Matta

OTTAWA --- Evella Catherine Matta, 45, Ottawa, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at an Ottawa hospital.

She was born Feb. 18, 1957, in Wichita, the daughter of Everett and Sarah Little Hoffman. She was raised in Kansas City, Kan., and attended school in Santa Monica, Calif. She graduated from Pelletier High School in Los Angeles in 1975 and moved to Ottawa from California in 1991.
