Ruby Brickey

GREAT BEND --- Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend for Ruby M. Brickey, 81. She died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at a Rossville nursing home.

Mrs. Brickey was a sales clerk at Duckwalls from 1964 to 1969, at Self Service Drug from 1969 to 1984 and at the Family Pharmacy from 1984 to 1989, all in Great Bend.

She was born Jan. 3, 1922, in Stafford County, to Clyde and Jennie DeGarmo Stimatze. She moved to Great Bend from Zook in 1964 and then to Topeka in 1994.

Mrs. Brickey was a member of Zook Home Demonstration Unit, Zook United Methodist Women and Trinity United Methodist Church in Great Bend.

She married William "Bill" Brickey on Aug. 31, 1941, in Kinsley. He died Feb. 26, 1989. Mrs. Brickey also was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Charla Ann Brickey, Benjamin Kyle Brickey and Andrew Jacob Brickey.

Survivors include two sons, Doug Brickey, Arkansas City, and Teddy Brickey, Grantville; a daughter, Linda Jo Pore, Topeka; two brothers, Len Stimatze, Byers, and Truman "Fat" Stimatze, Fort Dodge; two sisters, Lois Spencer and Opal Covey, both of Ulysses; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Burial will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery at Zook. Mrs. Brickey will lie in state at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association and sent in care of the funeral home.

James and Bernice

Brunkan

DYERSVILLE, Iowa --- James A. Brunkan, 84, and his wife, Bernice R. Brunkan, 80, of Dyersville, were killed in an automobile accident Tuesday, March 4, 2003.

Mr. Brunkan and his wife farmed near Sand Spring, Iowa, until 1963, and they owned and operated the Sand Springs Station until they retired.

Mr. Brunkan was born on Oct. 25, 1918, in Dyersville, Iowa, the son of Anton and Mary Heiring Brunkan. Mrs. Brunkan was born on April 13, 1922, in Holy Cross, Iowa, the daughter of William and Ruth Meyer.

Mr. Brunkan was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters.

Jim and Bernice were married on Sept. 22, 1941, in Worthington, Iowa.

Survivors include four sons, William Brunkan, Davenport, Iowa, Thomas Brunkan, Sioux City, Iowa, James Brunkan, Belton, Mo., and Steven Brunkan, Meriden, Kan.; two daughters, Susan Genalo, Elkhart, Iowa, and Sharon Brunkan, Garner, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Brunkan also is survived by a sister, Stella Hogan, in Montana; and four brothers, Robert Brunkan and David Brunkan, both of Dyersville, Walter Brunkan, Greene, Iowa, and Richard Brunkan, Milwaukee.

Mrs. Brunkan also is survived by a sister, Agnes Kintzle, Manchester, Iowa.

The Rev. Wesley Davis

HUTCHINSON --- Memorial services were Monday at First United Methodist Church in Hutchinson for the Rev. Wesley Davis, who died Jan. 6, 2003.

Velma Drybread

GARNETT --- Velma J. Drybread, 76, Garnett, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at her home.

Services will be announced by Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett.

Orlan Johnson

ULYSSES --- Orlan P. Johnson, 80, Ulysses, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at a Ulysses hospital.

Mr. Johnson was a maintenance supervisor on road construction for Koss Construction Co. in Topeka for 38 years. He served in the Navy aboard the USS Shamrock Bay aircraft carrier during World War II.

He was born Nov. 24, 1922, in Wilson County, to Robert Oxley and Minnie Florence Preston Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

He married Marjorie Jean Metcalf on July 26, 1943, in Ulysses. She died Oct. 20, 1998.

Survivors include three sisters, Pauline Alford, Ulysses, Nora Dack, Van Orme, Texas, and Jesse Kline, Big Lake, Texas.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses. Burial with military graveside rites conducted by the Charles B. Hart Post No. 79 of the American Legion will be at the Ulysses Cemetery. Mr. Johnson will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Western Prairie Care Home and sent in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, 67880.

Genieva Laughlin

NORTON --- Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the First Church of God in Norton for Genieva Eloise Laughlin, 88, Norton. She died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at a Kearney, Neb., hospital.

Mrs. Laughlin had been a cook at Norton County Hospital.

She was born April 25, 1914, in Norton, to George Lewis and Bertha Garrison Colip.

Mrs. Laughlin was a member of the First Church of God in Norton, Willing Workers Sunshine Club, an extension homemakers unit, Fraternal Order of Eagles and she was past noble grand of the Rebekah Lodge.

She married Harold John Laughlin on June 30, 1935, in Norton County. He survives.
