History Day competition winners announced

The theme for this year's Kansas History Day competition was "Rights and Responsibilities in History." Throughout the 2002-03 school year, more than 1,200 students in 19 counties participated.
Kansas students in grades 6 through 12 competed in junior and senior categories, divided by individuals and groups, performances, documentaries, papers and exhibits.
The Kansas History Day competition is administered by the Kansas State Historical Society with additional support from the Eisenhower Foundation.
Area winners include the following:
Junior papers: Kirsten Maples, "Tuskegee Syphilis Study: Violation of Rights of Research Subjects," Topeka Collegiate School, Topeka, teacher John MacDonald, district 3, first place.
Junior individual exhibits: Christina Gitto, "The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire: A Labor Rights Tragedy," Topeka Collegiate School, Topeka, teacher Laura Straus, district 3, first place; Ashley Hodges, "Those Blooming Women and Their Rights," Frank V. Bergman Elementary, Manhattan, teacher Terry Healy, district 4, third place.
Junior group exhibits: Kevin Van Slyke, Taylor Patterson and Trevor Weaver, "Voyage of the S.S. St. Louis," Woodrow Wilson School, Manhattan, teacher Terry Healy, district 4, second place; and Kevin Coffey and Ani Mulukutla, "Joseph McCarthy," Frank V. Bergman School, Manhattan, teacher Terry Healy, district 4, third place.
Junior individual performances: Caitlin Fitzpatrick, "Frances Willard: Crusader on the Sea of Temperance and Suffrage," Topeka Collegiate School, Topeka, teacher John MacDonald, district 3, first place; and Ann Goodson, "The Truth Shall Set You Free! Rights and Responsibilities of the Press," Wamego Middle School, Wamego, teacher Marcia Fox, district 4, second place.
Junior group performances: Atima Lui, Chase Hamilton and Davis Wittig, "John Ritchie and the Underground Railroad in Kansas," Topeka Collegiate School, Topeka, teacher Laura Straus, district 3, second place.
Junior individual documentaries: Andrew Tate, "Water Rights: Responsible Use of the Ogallala Aquifer," Washburn Rural Middle School, Topeka, teacher Donna Sanders, district 3, first place; Matthias Heilke, "Rights versus Responsibilities: The War Measures Act," Central Junior High School, Lawrence, teacher Dari Hilbert, district 1, second place; and Hannah Frydman, "Defying the Constitution: America's Abandonment of the Jews," Central Junior High School, Lawrence, teacher Dari Hilbert, district 1, third place.
