Scout to receive

Eagle award

Andy Fry, 16, will receive the Eagle Scout Award in Court of Honor ceremonies at 4 p.m., Oct. 19, at the Topeka Round-Up Club, 7843 S.W. 37th, where he completed his Eagle project.

Fry is a member of Boy Scout Troop 7, which meets at First Christian Church. He earned 27 merit badges while working toward the Eagle Award. His Eagle project entailed the renovation of the Chuckwagon building at the Topeka Round-Up Club, during which he raised the money for the renovation and oversaw 230 volunteer hours.

Fry has served Troop 7 as bugler, librarian, scribe and assistant patrol leader. His Scouting activities include summer camp at Camp Jayhawk, Kansas State University merit badge conferences, Washburn University merit badge conferences, Klondike Derby and Jayhawk Area camporees.

He began Scouting with Cub Scout Pack 14 before joining Troop 7. Fry, the son of Steve and Anita Fry, is a junior at Topeka West High School, where he is an honor roll student and participates in jazz band and the Charger marching band.

Street closings

are announced

Topeka's traffic engineering section has announced three projects that will require closing some areas to traffic or reducing traffic to one lane.

- Wanamaker Road between S.W. 19th Terrace and S.W. 21st will be restricted to one lane of traffic in each direction beginning today. Speed in the construction area will be reduced to 25 mph. Workers will be replacing broken pavement in the northbound lanes. The road is expected to be open to normal traffic on Friday.

- N.E. Strait between N.E. Seward and N.E. Sardou will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday while crews work on a gas line. Northbound traffic should detour from Seward to Chester, then Chester to Sardou and Sardou to Strait. Southbound traffic should detour from Sardou to Chester, then Chester to Seward and Seward to Strait.

- The southbound lane of S.E. Carnahan between Interstate 70 and S.E. 21st will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday while crews work on sewer lines. Carnahan traffic will be restricted to one lane. The contractor will use flagmen or a yield sign arrangement to direct traffic through the site.

The following organizations have scheduled meetings or activities through the week.

- The American Historical Society of Germans from Russia, Northeast Kansas Chapter 15, will meet at 2 p.m. today in the basement of St. Joseph's Church, at S.W. 3rd and Van Buren. The program, by Racella Briggs, will be on cemetery research.

- Adams Business Forms Retirees will meet at 11:45 a.m. Monday at The Old Country Buffet at West Ridge Mall. Paul Livingston, of the Kansas Rehabilitation Hospital, will talk about strokes. For more information, call Paul Ogle at (785) 272-1666.

- The Downtown Kiwanis Club will meet at noon Monday in the Florentine Room at Jayhawk Tower, S.W. 7th and Jackson.

- The Prairieland Depression Era Glass Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 S.W. 10th. The program, by Fred Stone, will be on carnival glass. New members are welcome.

- The National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees and Spouses Unit 140 will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Coyote Canyon, 1251 S.W. Ashworth Place. The speakers will be Liz Montano, news director for WIBW Radio, and Ralph Hipp, news anchor for WIBW TV Channel 13. For more information about the meeting, call Fred Shaw at 228-0676. - The Fleming Retirees will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lake Shawnee Shelterhouse No. 6. Lunch will be a barbecue. Members should bring a covered dish, vegetable, salad or dessert. Retirees and former associates and spouses are invited. For more information, call Maxine Horton at (785) 266-7393.

- Topeka Evening Nucomers will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at RoomMakers Home Furnishing for Less, 1155 S.W. Wanamaker, for a tour, followed by dessert and coffee at another location. Nucomers is a club for those new to Topeka or those who want to meet new friends. For more information, call Sue at (785) 228-2489.

- The Topeka Audubon Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 S.W. 10th. Rex Buchanan, co-author of "Roadside Kansas" and associate director for public outreach at the Kansas Geological Survey, will present the program, "Kansas Springs --- Where Human and Natural History Intersect."
