Birthdays

Edna Hansbearry, Topeka, will celebrate her 95th birthday on Tuesday with a card shower.

Mrs. Hansbearry was born Nov. 11, 1908, near Hoyt. She worked at Topeka Supply Depot during World War II. For many years she was a bookkeeper at Sach's Florist in Topeka.

She married Lee Hansbearry on Oct. 18, 1930. They were married 62 years before his death in April 1992.

She has one daughter, Sharon Hansbearry Spencer, Netawaka; two granddaughters, Brenda Spencer Greathouse, Hays, and Julie Spencer Cordell, Platte City, Mo.; and four great-grandchildren.

George Holler, Topeka, will celebrate his 90th birthday at an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. today in Pat's Pub at McCrite Plaza Retirement Community, 1608 S.W. 37th.

Hosts will be his children, John and Sally Holler, and grandchildren. Mr. Holler has three grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.

He was born Nov. 10, 1913. Mr. Holler retired in 1979 as the owner of Holler Oil after 48 years of service.

He and his wife Amy were married for 66 years prior to her death on May 7, 2002.

Laura Holthus, Smith Center, will celebrate her 90th birthday at an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 16 at Srader Center in Smith Center.

She was born Nov. 16, 1913. Mrs. Holthus lived on a farm north of Athol for 28 years and worked in the dietary department at Smith Center Hospital 16 years.

She married Fred H. Holthus on Oct. 21, 1931. They were married for almost 40 years before his death on Oct. 13, 1971.

Their children are Lawrence El Dean and Kathryn Holthus, Smith Center; Sharleen and Claude Allen, Smith Center; and Allen and Barbara Holthus, New Germany, Minn. Mrs. Holthus has seven living grandchildren and one deceased, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Martha Colstrom, Osage City, will celebrate her 85th birthday at an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 15 at Grace Lutheran Church, 210 Holliday in Osage City. Hosts will be her children.

Martha Didier Colstrom was born Nov. 16, 1918, in Osage City, where she has been a lifelong resident.

Her husband, Clarence, died in 1985.

Her children are Frank and Barbara Prost, Carbondale, Gary and Martha Colstrom, Libertyville, Ill.; Charles and Donna Martin, Larry and Jeannine Colstrom and Mike and Debby Bean, all of Osage City. She has 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great- granddaughter.

She requests no gifts.

Dorothy Nichols, Ottawa, a former legislator, will celebrate her 80th birthday at an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Franklin County Visitors Information Center, 2011 E. Logan, 1/2 mile west of the junction of I-35 and K-68 highway at Ottawa. Hosts will be her children.

Mrs. Nichols was born Nov. 13, 1923.

She and her family operated at a popular Ottawa eatery, Lee's Downtowner, from 1964-84. She was mayor of Ottawa in 1978-79. She was state representative for the 14th District from 1981-86. She was appointed to the Kansas Public Employee-Employer Relations Board, serving from 1987-1995.

Her six children and spouses are Steve and Nancy Nichols, Jacksonville, Fla.; Chris and Allen Campbell, Ottawa; Stan and Janice Nichols, Ottawa; Julie and Jeff McAdoo, Ottawa; the late Melissa Nichols Price and the late Joel S. Nichols. She has one stepdaughter, Penny Knapp, Las Vegas, 14 grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Barnes, Topeka, will celebrate her 80th birthday at a family dinner Nov. 16 and with a card shower.

Hosts will be her children and spouses, Ann and Leonard Urban, Shawnee; Bill and Connie Barnes, Andy and Patty Barnes, Maureen and Jim Leiker and Rob and Sandra Barnes, all of Topeka; and Paul and Becky Barnes, Herington.

Mrs. Barnes was born Nov. 14, 1923, in St. Joseph, Mo. She married George W. Barnes in 1946. He died in 1990. Mrs. Barnes was a homemaker until she began working at Menninger in 1977. She retired from Menninger in 1988.

Jean H. Herrmann, Scranton, will celebrate his 80th birthday at an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 15 at the City Park building in Scranton.
