Prodigy team blitzes through tournament

Topeka Prodigy team takes first place at tournament with shootout victory

The Topeka Prodigy Rush 13-under team won its division of the 2003 Governor's Cup Soccer Tournament.

This is the first Governor's Cup title for the Rush. The team has played together under coach Colby Williams since the age of 8.

The Rush defeated the Omaha Gladiators in a shootout in the championship game.

The Rush took an early lead in the second half when Austin Wegener headed in a pass from John Davidson. The Gladiators tied the score with 12 minutes left to play. The Rush went on to win with shootout goals from Caleb Gesner, Ryan Seidel and Jordan Crawford. Goalie Derrick Allen made two big saves to preserve the victory for the Rush.

Other scores in the tournament were as follows: Rush 2, Wichita Wizards 1; Rush 2, Shawnee Elite 0; Rush 4, Topeka Rhinos 1; Rush 1, Kaw Valley 0.

Members of the Rush are Derrick Allen, Dustin Deisher, Nick Golden, Dylan Filburn, Laramie Kirkwood, Jordan Crawford, Taylor Petrik, Austin Schile, Ryan Seidel, Ryan Haverkamp, John Davidson, Caleb Gesner, Colby Arnold, Eric Semjenow, Austin Wegener and Taylor Valdez.

The team is coached by Colby Williams, Don Wegener and Ron Crawford.

The Topeka Prodigy Blitz won the 14-under division of the 2003 Sunflower Soccer Governor's Cup Soccer Tournament.

This is the fourth time the team has won the tournament.

The team has played together since the age of 8.

The Blitz shut out the Omaha Aresenal, who are ranked No. 18 in the nation, 1-0 in the championship game. The Blitz scored early on a goal from Tanner Speake off a pass from John Kasper. The team played strong defense for the rest of the game to maintain the lead.

Goalie Spenser Scott got the shutout for the Blitz.

The Blitz had three other shutouts in the tournament.

Other scores throughout the tournament for the team were as follows: Blitz 4, Capital Soccer Club 0; Blitz 4, Blue Valley 1; Blitz 8, Emporia Lionheart 0; Blitz 5, KC Strikers 0.
