Topeka West earns spot in High Q

Topeka West High School earned one of the top 16 scores in the 2003-2004 High Q academic competition Super Saturday qualifying event Dec. 6 at Washburn University. Topeka West also took third place for 5A schools.
Other Topeka teams participating in the event were from Cair Paravel-Latin School, Hayden High School, Seaman High School, Shawnee Heights High School and Washburn Rural High School.
The Cair Paravel-Latin School, Shawnee Heights High School and Topeka West teams will now advance to the final rounds of competition. These single elimination contests are taped and are broadcast February to May 2004 by WIBW TV-13 and KTWU Channel 11.
Earning first place for 1A schools was Cair Paravel-Latin School. Shawnee Heights won second place honors for 5A schools.
Other schools participating in the televised final contests are Blue Valley North (Overland Park), Derby High, Immaculata High (Leavenworth), Independent School (Wichita), Junction City High, Kapaun Mt. Carmel High (Wichita), Lawrence High, Lawrence Free State High, Leavenworth High, Manhattan High, Maranatha Academy (Shawnee), Olathe East High and Wichita East High.
The Super Saturday qualifying contest allowed teams of high school students from across Kansas to compete against one another in answering questions on topics such as art, literature, history, math and science.
The High Q academic competition is sponsored by Washburn University and WIBW TV.
Topeka West High team members are: Chris Davies, junior, son of Craig Davies and Traci Davies-Miller; Avery Frantzen, senior, son of Jeff and Naomi Frantzen; Sean Henderson, senior, son of Mark and Elizabeth Henderson; Tim Hendricks, sophomore, son of Jeff and Rhonda Hendricks; and Jonathan To, senior, son of Dominic and Marina To. Coaches are Diane Goheen and Deb Latimer.
