Rockets to play in NY Lightning take second at state tournament

Topeka 12-year-old team to compete in Baseball Hall of Fame tournament

The Topeka Rockets, a 12-year-old SCABA team, has been selected to play in the Cooperstown Dreams Park and American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame National Invitational Tournament this week in Cooperstown, N.Y.

The Rockets will be competing to earn a chance to play in the National American Tournament of Champions from Aug. 28 to Sept. 3.

This tournament is one of 11 weekly, national tournaments that started June 19 and will run through the tournament of champions. Nine of those weekly winners and 55 other tournament winners will earn the right to participate in the national tournament of champions.

This week the Rockets will compete will 63 other teams from around the country. Each team will play eight games and then will be seeded in a single-elimination championship tournament which will end on Friday.

Each team will also participate in nightly skills competitions, including hitting, throwing and base running.

All participants will also be enshrined in the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Topeka Lightning, a 10-under A girls softball team, placed second at the ASA Kansas State Softball Tournament on June 25-26 in Wichita.

The team is now qualified to advance to the ASA regional tournament this month in Omaha, Neb., and the national tournament in Aug. in Tulsa, Okla.

Members of the Lightning are Morgan Baldwin, Abbey Breeding, Jessica Cooper, Bailey Koepsel, Charla Lopez, Mallorie Mendoza, Cori Munoz, Kelly Scannell, Tayler Schwartz, Carmen Thomsen, Caryn Welch and Jenny Ziegler.

The team is coached by Jason McMillen, Joe Munoz, Mark Koepsel and Jeff Scannell.

Vipers win

state tournament

The Topeka Vipers, a 12-under team, won the AABC 12-under state tournament on July 10-12 at Turner Recreation in Kansas City.

The Vipers lost their first game to the Kansas City Black Sox 15- 13, but then won their next three to take the title.

They defeated Topeka Cubs 15-14, the Kansas City Black Sox 12-6 and the Topeka Outlaws 13-0.

Outlaws take second

at state tourney

The Topeka Outlaws, a 12-under HPBA baseball team, took second place at the state tournament on July 10-12 in Kansas City.

The Outlaws received a first-round bye and then defeated the Topeka Cubs and Kansas City Black Sox. The team then lost to the Topeka Warriors but then faced them again and defeated them by one run.

In the championship game, the Outlaws lost to the Topeka Vipers to take second.

The Outlaws entered the tournament with a regular season record of 16-4.

They finished second in their HPBA division. Their last tournament of the season begins tonight.
