The Topeka Astros, a 7-8-year-old Ken Berry softball team, took first place in the Novice division during the 2004 season. The team finished the regular season with a record of 15-1.

Members of the team are Ally Zerbe, Anita Parish, Briley Hollar, Daryane Douglas, Katelyn Bauer, Kelli Mans, Lara Shufflebarger, Madison Naill, Marisa Cayler, Megan Farrington, Sophia Holman and Talisa Hughes. The team is coached by Jerry Bauer, Tony Parish, Rick Hollar and Mark Cayler.

Spears win

Onaga tournament

The Topeka Spears, a 12-under SCGSA team, took first place at the Onaga 14-under/12-under tournament by going undefeated.

Members of the Spears are Lacy Cowan, Grace Jones, Kylie Shughart, Janessa Escobar, Jasmine Long, Samantha Rice, Johna Herrera, Tracy King, Malissa Swietek and Justina Matulka.The team is coached by Tom Herrera, Robert Rice and Tim Swietek.

Lady Tigers win

awards at camp

Kourtnie Olson and Sammy Maley, Hamilton High School girls basketball players, attended the Heart of America basketball camp in Salina and both came away with awards.

Olson, a sophomore at Hamilton, received the Most Coachable award and the Best Attitude award in the Senior League.

Maley, also a sophomore at Hamilton, made the All-Star team and received the second medal for the Best Defensive Player in the Advance Senior League. She also received seven other certificates.

Both Olson and Maley are coached by Adam Birch at Hamilton.

There were 136 girls participating in the Heart of America camp.
