Belles fifth in nationals Mustangs place third in MAYB tournament

Kansas 16-under girls AAU basketball team upsets No. 1 seed in Tennessee

The Kansas Belles, a 16-under AAU girls basketball team, placed fifth at the AAU National Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn. The tournament was held July 13 through July 17.

The top 64 teams from all over the nation qualified by winning their corresponding regional tournaments. The Belles won the Missouri/ Kansas regional championship.

The Belles started the tournament by upsetting the No. 1 seed Washington D.C. Panthers 60-52.

They continued their winning streak for seven more games defeating teams from North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, West Virginia and Alabama. The Belles finished the tournament in the Elite Eight losing to the Georgia Metros 61-60 at the buzzer.

Kelsey Chipman and Kaylee Manns both play for Washburn Rural.

Other members of the Belles are Lauren Willis, Kansas City; Micaela Uriell, Kansas City; Megan Klinger, Lawrence; Marlies Gipson, McPherson; Emily Hoskins, Kansas City; Val Siemens, Towanda; Kari Kincaid, Andover; and Anna Florzak, Kansas City. The team is coached by Ron Hellwig and Norton Hook.

The Topeka Mustangs, a fourth-grade boys basketball team, took third place in their division at the National Summer MAYB Kickoff Tournament on July 11-13 in Newton.

About 800 boys and girls teams from 20 states participated in the tournament.

In the third place game, the Mustangs held only a two-point lead at halftime, but had a strong second half and defeated the Oklahoma Triple Threat 41-25.

They also defeated the Kansas Mad Dogs and Emporia Junior Spartans, but they lost to the Circle All Stars in the tournament.

The team is mainly made up of boys from Wanamaker Elementary School.

Members of the Mustangs are Josh Woodward, Allan McFarland, Trevor Falcon, Brandon Ediger, Tanner Ashbury, Casey Murphy, Cameron Powell, Jared Whitten, Justin Voorhees and Michael Thompson.

The team is coached by Kevin McFarland and John Woodward.

Stars place fifth

at World Series

The Capital City Stars, a 16-under softball team, placed fifth in the USSSA World Series in Aurora, Colo. Fifty-six team participated in the tournament.

The Stars had a record of 7-2 during the week defeating teams from Colorado, Texas, Nebraska, Arizona, Minnesota and Arkansas.

Alex Flint was nominated to the All-Tournament Team for the Stars.

The Stars finished the season with a record of 28-14 placing first in three tournaments and second in the SCGSA league.

Members of the Stars are Megan Bergstrom, Kacy Covert, Alex Flint, McKenzie Flint, Kelsie Gengler, Chelsie Henry, Andrea New, Danielle Sicard, Scarlett Sidwell, Jessica Slocum, Dani Starkey and Kelsey Smith.
