Galaxy earns silver Vipers win Highland Park division title

Topeka 18-under Select girls soccer team takes second in USA Cup

The Topeka Select Galaxy, an 18-under girls soccer team, took second place in the USA Cup on July 16-18 in Blaine, Minn.

The USA Cup featured over 380 teams from around the United States and other countries. Thirty international teams competed, including Japan, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Jamaica, Guatemala, Scotland and Ireland.

The Galaxy team is a member of the Topeka Select Soccer Club. This was its first time at this tournament, as well as its first tournament of the season.

In pool play, the Galaxy defeated teams from Cosmos, Ill., Red River, N.D., and tied a team from Rushmore, S.D.

In the quarterfinals, the team defeated a team from Grand Forks, N.D. In the semifinal game, the Galaxy won against the Northern Blast Legacy from South Dakota.

In the championship game, the Galaxy team met its first international opponent, Tokiwagi Soccer Academy from Sendai, Japan. Tokiwagi defeated the Galaxy to win the gold.

Members of the Galaxy are Jamila Saadi, Ashley Hille, Kelsie Gengler, Heather Snook, Sarah Peters, Anne Shafer, Kelsee Hickey, Alyson McDowell, Chelsea Hopkins, Jessie Lanzrath, Ashley Hards, Jenny Beaver, Katie Nichols, Katie Stamm, Katie Waugh, Erin Cripps, Emily Schlosser and Rachel Semjenow.

All the girls attend high schools in Topeka. The team is coached by Kyle Lear and Mike Parsons.

The Topeka Vipers, a 12-under baseball team, won the Highland Park Bronco division. The Vipers finished with a league record of 19-1.

Members of the Vipers are Garrett Nicol, Zach Kanicki, Matt Mohr, Trevor Kelly, Spencer Vanderbogart, John Laird, Jamon Carter- Williams, Zach Barnes, Colby Neiswender, Eric Brown, Cory Flynn and Michael Swoboda.

The team is coached by Rob Neiswender, Mark Laird, Rob Barnes and Rick Nicol.

Silver Lake wrestler

competes in Europe

Tyler Roth earned a gold medal in the 11-12-year-old freestyle division at the Youth World Friendship Games held in Heemstede, Netherlands.

Tyler pinned opponents from the Dutch International team and Germany in his quest for the gold medal.

Tyler served as a People to People Sports Ambassador, representing the United States in competition intended to let youth from across the world experience Olympic-style competition. Athletes from around the world met to compete in seven sports.

Emphasis was placed upon athletes having an opportunity to explore other cultures and customs. Tyler's travels included training and touring in England, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Tyler has wrestled locally for the Topeka Tornadoes and Junior Viking Wrestling Clubs. He is a four-time Kansas kids wrestling state qualifier, placing third and winning one state championship. He is in seventh grade at Silver Lake Junior High School.
