Erna Anna Schumann Dieckmann Boyer

NETAWAKA --- Erna Anna Schumann Dieckmann Boyer, 90, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004 at the Holton Manor.

Erna was born Nov. 1, 1913, at Netawaka, the daughter of Max and Meta Zwonitzer Schumann. She was a lifelong member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Netawaka and was a member of the Ladies Aid at the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Kurt, Arndt, Fritz and Harold; three siblings who died in infancy; and a granddaughter, Deanna Jo Weick.

Erna married Walter Dieckmann on Feb. 16, 1938. He died May 20, 1966. They lived in the Netawaka community all of their married years. She was a homemaker, a wonderful mother and a loving grandmother.

Survivors include a son, Robert Dieckmann, and his wife, Karen, Fairland, Okla.; two daughters, Betty Weick, and her husband, Norm, and Marilyn Forgy, and her husband, Fielden, both of Topeka; eight grandchildren, Tammy Moore, Kim Weick, Cindy Edmonds, Janelle Erickson, Stephen Forgy, Sherri Hartter, Luke Dieckmann and Zachary Dieckmann; 13 great-grandchildren and two to be born soon; a brother, Walter Schumann, and his wife, Edith, Wetmore; a sister-in-law, Frances Dieckmann, Netawaka; nieces, nephews and four step-children.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Netawaka Cemetery. Erna will lie in state after noon today at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton, where family and friends will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. She also will lie in state an hour before service time Friday at the church.

John Robert 'Jack' Dean

SALINA --- John Robert "Jack" Dean, 81, Salina, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004.

He was born July 28, 1923, in Marion, the son of C.D. and Doris Dean. He served in the Navy Air Corps during World War II. He received a B.S. and M.S. from Kansas State University, where he played basketball and baseball.

Mr. Dean was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He also played baseball with the Topeka Owls.

He taught and coached at Topeka High School and at Salina South High School. He finished his teaching career at Salina Central High School, retiring in 1985.

Mr. Dean was an avid fisherman and golfer. He was a member of Salina Municipal Men's Golf Association and the Senior Men's Golf Association. He was a member of University United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary "Jo," of the home; and a sister, Anne Walsh, Foxfire Village, N.C.

Memorial contributions may be sent to University United Methodist Church or to the "First Tee" at Salina Municipal Golf Course.

Mr. Dean was cremated. No visitation is scheduled. A private inunrment service will be at a later date. No other services are planned.

Shirley Mae Harris

LAWRENCE --- Shirley Mae Harris, 77, Lawrence, died Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at a Kansas City, Kan., hospital.

She was born Sept. 13, 1926, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Ernest R. and Jual Suddarth Acher. She moved with her family to Lawrence from Kansas City, Mo., in 1938. She graduated from Lawrence Memorial High School in 1944 and briefly attended The University of Kansas during World War II. Mrs. Harris was a homemaker.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and WELCA at the church. She served as the LINK coordinator and was a member of the funeral dinner committee at Trinity Lutheran Church.

She loved to paint and to play golf and bridge.

She married Stanley W. Harris on Nov. 20, 1945, in Lawrence. He survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Cheryl A. Merrill, Lawrence; two sons, Bryan Harris, Lawrence, and Stanley W. Harris Jr., San Antonio; a brother, Donald Acher, McLouth; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by a son, Lt. Russell L. Harris, on Feb. 11, 1969.

A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Warren- McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Trinity Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society and sent in care of the mortuary.

James F. Swoyer Jr.

OSKALOOSA --- James F. Swoyer Jr., 81, Oskaloosa, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at the Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa. The Rev. Sharon Chapel Brown and the Rev. Fred Leimkuhler are officiating. Burial will be in Hull Grove Cemetery in Winchester. Oskaloosa Masonic Lodge No. 14 will conduct Masonic graveside services. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. today at O'Trimble Funeral Home in Nortonville. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:30 p.m. today at the church in Oskaloosa.
