Before choosing a school, parents could be well-served by doing a little studying of their own.

The Kansas State Department of Education offers annual report cards for each school and school district. The report cards are accessible on the Internet at the department's Web site, www.ksbe.state.ks.us.

The report cards include test scores, demographics and graduation data for area schools.

Jenni Gaster Sopko, a spokeswoman for the National PTA in Chicago, suggests parents visit prospective schools, take a tour and talk to the principal. School Web sites often provide information about programs and activities at the schools.

"I think that sometimes parents have a hard time getting past neighborhood gossip and test scores," she said. "There is so much more to finding a good school for their children."

Important issues for parents to consider are funding, academic standards, staff qualifications, professional development for staff, community partnerships with the school and school maintenance.

She said parents also should check on the level of involvement from families and ensure that families are encouraged to get involved in schools.
