Cats' Wecker a Wooden finalist

Kansas State's Kendra Wecker was named one of the five finalists for the John R. Wooden Award as college basketball's player of the year on Wednesday.

The other finalists are Seimone Augustus of LSU, Duke's Monique Currie, Ohio State's Jessica Davenport and Janel McCarville of Minnesota.

The award, along with the men's winner, will be presented April 9 at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. More than 200 national sports writers and women's college basketball experts cast their votes, which were due Monday.

Wecker finished her career as the Big 12 career scoring leader with 2,333 points. She averaged 21 points and 10.1 rebounds per game this season and became only the second Big 12 player ever to record 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career.

This year's Wooden Award presentation will be broadcast live on a national CBS telecast.

Duke's Alana Beard won the first women's Wooden Award last year.

Mulkey-Robertson to get extension

DALLAS --- Baylor coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson is being rewarded with a new contract for leading the Lady Bears to the Final Four.

A university source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Wednesday that Baylor offered Mulkey-Robertson a new six-year contract that runs through the 2010-11 season. It was unclear if the coach had signed the deal, or what the financial terms were.

After Baylor's practice on the Waco campus, Mulkey-Robertson wouldn't go so far as to confirm the new deal.

"Baylor University has been good to me. ... I plan to be at Baylor for a long time," said Mulkey-Robertson, who is in her fifth year with the Lady Bears.

Baylor, the only private university in the Big 12, does not release contract information about its coaches.

Baylor plays LSU on Sunday night in Indianapolis, the first Final Four appearance for a team that was coming off a 7-20 season when Mulkey-Robertson took over.

She is 129-38 in five seasons with the Lady Bears (31-3), who have won 18 straight games.
