Rural places six on All-City swim team

City champion and Centennial League runner-up Washburn Rural placed a city-high six swimmers/divers on the boys All-City team.

Rural, which finished eighth in the state meet, placed Mike Heaney, Jeff Hagihara, Matt Regier, Nick Rockefeller, James Ungerer and James Ungerer on the All-City team.

Topeka High was next in line with three All-City picks --- Robert Hamilton, Michael Powell and Eric Sparks --- while Hayden placed Cooper Michel and Brandon Volz on the team, Seaman had David Pekrul as a first-teamer and Topeka West had Shane Winkenwader as an All- City pick. All-City capsules:

MIKE HEANEY, Washburn Rural --- Heaney was the city diving champion and finished second in the Centennial League in that event. He was ninth at state. Heaney was a second-team all-league pick.

JEFF HAGIHARA, Washburn Rural --- Hagihara was a city champion in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay and he finished second in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. He swam on Rural's Centennial League-winning teams in the 200 free relay and 400 free relay and he was third in the 100 free. At state, Hagihara swam on Rural's fourth- place 200 free relay and eighth-place 400 free relay teams. He was a first-team All-Centennial League pick.

ROBERT HAMILTON, Topeka High --- Hamilton was a city champion in the 200 individual medley, the 500 free and the 400 free relay and he was a member of the Trojan team that finished second in the 200 medley relay. In the Centennial League meet Hamilton was a member of High's winning 200 medley relay team and he finished second in the 200 free and 100 butterfly and third in the 200 free relay. Hamilton was a first-team All-Centennial League pick.

COOPER MICHEL, Hayden --- Michel finished third in the city meet in three events --- the 200 individual medley, the 100 fly and the 200 medley relay team.

DAVID PEKRUL, Seaman --- Pekrul finished third in the city meet in the 50 free and 200 free relay and he was fourth in the 200 medley relay and 100 fly. Pekrul was a second-team All-Centennial League selection.

MICHAEL POWELL, Topeka High --- Powell was a city champion in the 400 free relay and he finished second at the city meet in the 200 medley relay and 100 fly and third in the 200 free. At the Centennial League meet Powell was a member of High's winning 200 medley relay team and he was third in the 500 free and 200 free relay. Powell was a second-team All-Centennial League pick.

MATT REGIER, Washburn Rural --- Regier was second at the city meet in the 200 individual medley and the 400 free relay and he placed fifth in the 100 fly.

NICK ROCKEFELLER, Washburn Rural --- Rockefeller was a city champion in four events --- the 200 medley relay, the 50 free, the 100 free and the 200 free relay. He was also a four-time champ in the Centennial League meet --- the 50 free, the 100 free, the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay. At state Rockefeller finished seventh in the 50 free and the 100 free and he was part of Rural's fourth-place team in the 200 free relay and the Junior Blues' eighth- place team in the 400 free relay. Rockefeller was a first-team all- league selection.

ERIC SPARKS, Topeka High --- Sparks was a city champion in the 100 backstroke and the 400 free relay and he finished second in the 100 free and the 200 medley relay. At the Centennial League meet Sparks was first in the 200 individual medley and the 200 medley relay, second in the 100 breast and third in the 200 free relay. He was a first-team All-Centennial League choice.

JAMES UNGERER, Washburn Rural --- Ungerer was a four-event city champion, winning the 100 fly and 200 free and swimming on Rural's winning teams in the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay. At the Centennial League meet, Ungerer was a champion in the 200 free, 100 butterfly, 200 free relay and 400 free relay. He was fourth at state in the 200 free relay and eighth in the 400 free relay. Ungerer was a first-team All-Centennial League pick.

JEREMIAH UNGERER, Washburn Rural --- Ungerer was second in the city meet in the 200 free, the 500 free and the 200 free relay. He was second at the league meet in the 500 free and the 100 back. He was a first-team All-Centennial League selection.

BRANDON VOLZ, Hayden --- Volz placed third in the city meet in the 500 freestyle and he was fourth in the 200 free and fourth in the 400 free relay.

SHANE WINKENWADER, Topeka West --- Winkenwader was second in the city meet in diving and placed second in the 200 free relay and fourth in the 50 free and sixth in the 200 medley relay. Winkenwader was third in the 200 medley relay at the Centennial League meet. He was a second-team all-league choice.
