The man accused of the July 15 shooting death of Jermaine Cunningham and attempted murder of Terrell Hayes near downtown Topeka was arrested recently in Chicago, said Detective Kent Biggs, of the Topeka Police Department.

Antwan T. Peppers, 34, was picked up in Chicago on an existing federal warrant related to a parole violation.

He was charged Friday in Shawnee County with first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder related to the shooting in July near Terry's Bar & Grill.

Cunningham, 20, was found shot to death in a parked car outside the bar at 522 S.W. 6th .

Hayes, 16, was found on a nearby sidewalk with gunshot wounds. Hayes suffered life-threatening injuries in the shooting.

That shooting came just 12 hours after a fatal shooting less than a block away.
