Education news will continue to appear in The Topeka Capital- Journal throughout the summer, and Education Watch will return in the fall.
Topeka Collegiate School
Washburn University assistant coach Ewan Auguste was the guest speaker at a sports recognition program May 15.
The farewell assembly for eighth-graders was Friday, followed by the 2007-08 student council induction.
The student council will sponsor its annual talent show today and Tuesday.
The middle school recognition assembly will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
A reunion for alumni will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Graduation for the class of 2007 will be at 10 a.m. Friday.
Shawnee Heights USD 450
County Commission Chairman Ted Ensley and other county officials visited a social studies class at Shawnee Heights Middle School on May 15.
Shawnee Heights High School senior Grant Waniska was selected to attend the 24th annual Governor's Scholars Award Program, which honors the top academic 1 percent of Kansas high school seniors.
Area news
The National Science Foundation has announced its Presidential Award winners in math and science. The Kansas winner is Terri Hays Dow, who teaches third grade at Wamego West Elementary School.
Michael Palmer Heinonen, grandson of Topeka couple Jerry and Jane Holley, swam from Alcatraz Island in San Francisco bay to the California shore at Aquatic Park near Fisherman's Wharf. Heinonen is 9 years old and part of Swim Neptune and Team Alcatraz.
Seaman USD 345
A softball game for fifth- and sixth-graders will be in the afternoon today at Lyman Elementary School.
A music showcase and talent show will be 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at Lyman Elementary School, followed by a PTO luncheon at noon and field day at 1:30 p.m.
Promotion for Lyman Elementary sixth-graders will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the school gym.
An end of the year assembly for Lyman Elementary will be 9:15 a.m. Thursday, followed by dismissal at 11 a.m.
Topeka USD 501
The National Society of High School Scholars has announced that Topeka West student Aaron Riggs has been selected for membership.
The Society recognizes top scholars in the nation and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence.
Topeka High senior Pablo Kennedy was selected to attend the 24th annual Governor's Scholars Award Program on May 6. The recognition assembly honors the top academic 1 percent of Kansas high school seniors.
Terri Hodge, a third-grade teacher at Avondale West Elementary School, was named a local winner in the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year contest.
She won the honor from the S.W. 37th Wal-Mart store, which presented her school with a $1,000 grant.
Auburn-Washburn USD 437
Auburn Elementary School, 810 N. Commercial in Auburn, had its annual Iditarod Awards banquet May 17.
The following spring semester students in Melody Forbes' Advanced Word classes passed the Microsoft Word 2003 Certification Exam at Shuler Education Center on May 3-4: Sloan Breight, Brett Brett, Kyle Bruggemeyer, Ana Buchele, Anthony Bunting, Rachel Butler, Edward Castello, Brandon Clark, Christopher Coffman, Kelsey Drake, Christopher Dunn, Ashley Falcon, Samantha Friesen, Danny Fryberger, Mitchell Graham, Gretchen Gravenstein, Bradley Hanvy, Brittney Holtzman, Giselle Hoyos, Corey Jackson, Matt Johnson, Kelton Lemons, Taylor Lynch, Denise Mannen, Adrianna Mosqueda-Lopez, Meredith Muller, Jordan Ochsner, Natalie Oliver, Faith Pearson, Kelsey Schmiedeler, Zachary Smith, Kacia Turner and Jeremiah Ungerer. The following students in Teresa Golden's Advanced Spreadsheets classes were recognized for passing the Microsoft Office Specialist Exam for Advanced Excel and PowerPoint: (Microsoft Office Specialists in Advanced Excel Office 2003XP Core Level) Trent Annan, Anastacia Culberston, Kevin Helmer, Brandy Hirsch, Karim Hudda, Lauren Magathan, Ben Moser, Allison Post, Brian Wood and Scott Wortham; (Microsoft Office Specialists in PowerPoint Office 2003 XP) Denise Mead, Jabiz Behzadpour and Sarah Black; and (Microsoft Office Specialists in Excel Office 2003 XP Expert Level) Max Vosburgh.
The test was conducted at Shuler Education Center and students used a "live" Microsoft Office application where students perform a series of tasks to demonstrate their ability. The MOS certification authenticates the students' skills and knowledge in using Microsoft 2003/XP Office.
Jay Shideler Elementary School, 4948 S.W. Wanamaker, will have a recognition and talent show at 9 a.m. today.
Pauline South Intermediate School will have a talent show at the school, 7035 S.W. Morrill, at 1:30 p.m. today.
Auburn Elementary, 810 N. Commercial in Auburn, will have a talent show and awards ceremony Tuesday. The awards ceremony will be at 9 a.m., and the talent show will be at 2 p.m.
Indian Hills Elementary School, 7456 S.W. 29th, will have an awards ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. It also will have a flash card contest at 10 a.m. and a talent show at 2 p.m.
