A man who pulled a gun last year when security guards tried to stop him for shoplifting a pair of black Nike tennis shoes at West Ridge Mall has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison.
U.S. District Judge Richard D. Rogers imposed the sentence Tuesday on Damien C. Ford, 22, of Topeka, who previously had pleaded guilty to a felony count of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.
Ford pulled a handgun after being confronted by security guards on May 10, 2006, at the J.C. Penney store at the mall, said Jim Cross, spokesman for Eric Melgren, U.S. attorney for Kansas. Cross said Ford fled the store but was arrested by Topeka police.
