The Topeka International Association of Fire Fighters Local 83 Honor Guard is raising money to attend two memorial ceremonies honoring Topeka fire Capt. Tony Cox, who died in the line of duty last year.
Cici's Pizza will donate 25 percent of its revenue today to the honor guard's trip, said Diane Hawkins, apparatus operator for the Topeka Fire Department. Customers must specify they are making a purchase as part of the honor guard's fundraiser.
Off-duty members of the honor guard will be on hand between 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 to 8 p.m. to help clear tables and thank the public for its support.
The cost of pizza will be $4 for adults and $3 for children. Both of the Cici's Pizza restaurants, one located at 2130 S.W. Wanamaker Road and the other at S.W. Topeka Boulevard and Croix, are participating.
The honor guard will attend a Sept. 20 ceremony at the International Association of Fire Fighters Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Colorado Springs, Colo.
A trip to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial on the campus of the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Md., is scheduled for Oct. 3-5.
The Emmitsburg memorial was officially designated in 1990 by Congress as the national memorial to career and volunteer fallen firefighters.
Cox's name will be added to the memorials at both locations.
