VHS videotape is going the way of the police horse in the Shawnee County Sheriff's office.
The Shawnee County Commission approved the purchase Monday of 24 digital video cameras to replace the last of the department's in- car video units that record on VHS cassettes.
Capt. Shane Hoobler told commissioners the old VHS units are beginning to fail. A few still are working, he said, but the sheriff's office would like to replace all the old equipment before it fails.

In other action, the commission deferred action for one week on a proposal by Shawnee County election commissioner Elizabeth Ensley to supplement the citizens who work as board workers at polling places on election days. Her plan is to recruit a few county employees from various departments that can spare them for the training and for election day.
Another part of her plan is to offer an option to the 14-hour days poll workers have been asked to serve in the past. She now proposes two shifts of seven-hour workers. Those workers would be paid $45.85 for the seven-hour shift. But to encourage more 14-hour workers, the pay for that work would increase to $100 for the day.
Commissioners and department leaders had a number of questions about how the plan would work, including issues involving union contracts for county employees.
But the commission did approve a zoning change to I-1 light industrial for 118 acres at the northwest corner of S.W. Topeka and University boulevards to allow the land's use for future industrial development.
County planning director Barry Beagle told commissioners no one spoke against the change when it was heard by the planning commission. He noted, though, that a representative of the 190th Air Refueling Wing appeared and suggested a planning process to look at best land uses in the vicinity of Forbes Field.
Monday's commission meeting was the last for a week. There will be no Thursday meeting.
