Local & state: UNO's Weddle shoots another 75 at regional
Abbey Weddle, a former city girls champion at Washburn Rural, shot a second consecutive 75 for her Nebraska-Omaha team on Tuesday for a 150 total and sole possession of fourth place in the NCAA Division II North Regional golf tournament at Grand Forks, N.D.
Weddle trails teammate Sara Wolfe by four strokes. UNO leads by 10 shots over runner-up Minnesota State.
Kansas State coach Frank Martin officially announced Tuesday the signings of junior college players Buchi Awaji of Citrus College in California and Abdul Herrera of Hutchinson Community College.
Awaji is a 6-foot-3 shooting guard and Herrera a 6-11 power center.
Audrie Miller of the women's tennis team was named the Washburn Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year at the WU athletic department annual awards banquet. The Senior Student Athlete of the Year awards went to volleyball player Erica Cowhick (female) and football player Jake Lebahn (male).
Ichabod and Lady Blues team Most Valuable Player awards were presented to Jessica Mainz, soccer; Brandon Walker, football offense; Cary Williams, football defense; Tessa Jones, volleyball; Kyle Snyder, men's basketball; Corkey Stiger, women's basketball; Diana Goldsmith, women's tennis; Ryan Ward, men's tennis; Tyler Blankenship, baseball and Mandy Tarbutton, softball. The golf MVP will be announced at the end of the season.

Football: Chiefs open preseason at Chicago on Aug. 7
The Kansas City Chiefs will open preseason play at 7 p.m. on Aug. 7 against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
Next on the Chiefs exhibition schedule is the Arizona Cardinals at 7 p.m. on Aug. 16 at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Chiefs play at Miami at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 23 and host the St. Louis Rams in the annual Governor's Cup game at 7 p.m. on Aug. 28 at Arrowhead Stadium.
The New York Jets re-signed veteran cornerback Hank Poteat to a one-year deal Tuesday.
The Bears released veteran strong safety Adam Archuleta on Tuesday. Archuleta, 30, broke a hand early last season and started in just 10 of the 15 games in which he appeared.

Basketball: Huggins' 10-year deal at WVU worth $20 million
West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins will earn at least $20 million in guaranteed income over the next 10 years of his new contract, which includes incentives that could add thousands more.
West Virginia on Tuesday released details of the contract Huggins signed Friday.
Huggins will earn about $1.5 million this year, including a base salary of $250,000 and $1.25 million in supplemental compensation. His salary will increase a minimum of $100,000 per year, and he will receive an annual retention bonus of $100,000 starting next May 1, plus incentives.
Incentives include $10,000 for a first-round appearance in the NCAA tournament and $50,000 if the Mountaineers reach the championship game. Huggins would earn $20,000 if the Mountaineers win or tie for the Big East regular season championship, while a conference tournament title would also give him $20,000.
Sam Aubrey, who played on a national championship team in 1946 and succeeded Henry Iba as Oklahoma State's basketball coach, has died. He was 85.
He died Monday at a retirement center in Stillwater, the school's athletic department said Tuesday. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Aubrey was a starting forward on the 1946 national championship team at what was then Oklahoma A&M.
Former Duke player Nate James was hired as an assistant by coach Mike Krzyzewski on Tuesday.
James helped the Blue Devils win their most recent national championship in 2001.
General: Eight Belles trainer says horse never on steroids
The trainer of Eight Belles is certain the filly was never on steroids, and has ordered tests to prove it.
Larry Jones said Tuesday he wanted to dispel any suggestion the Kentucky Derby runner-up was on performance-enhancing drugs. Eight Belles was euthanized after breaking both front ankles Saturday, a quarter-mile after the finish at Churchill Downs.
"I guarantee there were no steroids ever on the horse," Jones said at a news conference at Delaware Park, site of the filly's first win.
Eight Belles' owner, Rick Porter, said the preliminary necropsy result showed the death came as a result of the fracture of the filly's two front cannon bones.
A federal judge denied bond for former track star Tim Montgomery on federal heroin distribution charges. Montgomery appeared Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Norfolk, Va., before Magistrate Judge F. Bradford Stillman. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and requested a jury trial, which the judge set for July 9.
