In "Dinner at Eight," the 1933 movie the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library will give a free screening of at 2 p.m. today, social-climbing sexpot Kitty Packard (Jean Harlow) bemoans, "Machines are taking the place of every profession." That sets up a great comeback from haughty aging actress Carlotta Vance (Marie Dressler), who says, "That, my dear, is something you never need to worry about!" The George Cukor-directed movie co-stars two Barrymores -- John and Lionel.

With 40 No. 1 country singles and almost as many more Top Ten hits to his credit, Country Music Hall of Famer Merle Haggard is an undisputed music legend. Country music fans in northeast Kansas will have an opportunity to see the 71-year-old singer-songwriter perform live at 7 p.m. Aug. 1 in the Great Lakes Ballroom of the Prairie Band Casino & Resort . A limited number of $60 tickets are on sale in the gift shop at the casino or at ticketweb.com.

A limited number of $25 tickets are on sale in the casino's gift shop for what was originally an invitation-only show in the Great Lakes Ballroom of the casino . Checker, 66, earned a Grammy in 1961 for "Let's Twist Again," and his No. 1 singles include "The Fly," "Limbo Rock," "Pony Time," "Popeye (The Hitchhiker)," "Slow Twistin' " and "The Twist."
