Taryn Brees (above), of Jefferson West, placed fifth in the 16- and-under division and eighth overall in the girls 5-kilometer race at the Down Under International Games in Brisbane, Australia.
Russell Frakes, of Hiawatha, finished sixth in the 17-and-over boys 5K, leading the Kansas boys to the Small Team title of the All- American race.
The Down Under Kansas cross country team is coached by Dan Whisler, who is the Sterling cross country coach.Softball
Carly Smerchek, Kallie Fischer and Kylie Dillon (above), of the Topeka Trouble, won the relay race competition July 21 at the USSSA 12U B World Series in Hutchinson.
Each girl was timed as she ran from home plate, around the bases and tagged the next runner at home.
Roller derby
The Capital City Crushers will host their last bout of the season against the Omaha (Neb.) Rollergirls at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Sk8away, 815 S.W. Fairlawn.
The Crushers are a female flat-track roller derby team.
Track & field
Topekans Derrick Perry and Tim Bell, Dustin Schmitz, of Concordia, and Dylan Hartnett, of Dodge City, placed seventh in the Young Men's 1,600-meter relay Saturday at the AAU Junior Olympics in Detroit.
Wheelchair games
Topekan Jack Deal, a Marine Corp veteran, won the IV Masters Slalom at the Wheelchair Games, July 27-29 in Omaha, Neb. Deal also placed second in the IV Masters discus, javelin and shot put events.Fourteen boxers from Topeka Golden Gloves will compete at the Ringside Championships, which begins today and runs through Saturday in Kansas City, Mo.
The boxers and their divisions are: Jadrien Vann, 132-pound 11- 12 boys; Jessica Haskins, 110-pound 13-14 girls; Qadir Green, 112- pound 13-14 boys; Mark Emerson, 112-pound Open boys; Geraldo Esquivel, 141-pound 13-14 boys; Jessica Barron, 106-pound Open girls; Sebastian Adame, 152-pound 15-16 boys; Julian Vann, 165- pound Open boys; Tevin Roberts, 141-pound 15-16 boys; Jorge Hernandez, 132-pound 17-34 men; Anthony Bostic, 141-pound 17-34 men; Brian Gonzales, 141-pound 17-34 men; Michael Gurrero, 152-pound Open men; George Cangiani, 178-pound 17-34 men.
