AREA EVENTS

Goodyear Hourly Retirees Club will meet at noon Friday at the Goodyear All Employees' Shelter House. Bring tableware, a potluck dish and dessert. For information, call Alan Barth at 246-1027.

Carol Roberts, chairwoman of Topeka's Law Enforcement Partnership Panel, will speak at the Topeka branch of the NAACP at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site, 1515 S.E. Monroe. For information, call Bill Beachy at 232-4388.

In celebration of the house's 20th anniversary of serving families in northeast Kansas, Ronald McDonald House Charities will host a fundraiser Saturday at the Capitol Plaza Hotel, 1717 S.W. Topeka Blvd.

This year's theme is Cinderella Storybook Ball. The evening will feature cocktails and dinner, followed by live and silent auctions, and dancing with the Bop Daddies. The 2007 event raised $82,000. The goal for 2008 is $100,000.

S.W. Western from 16th to 17th is closed for gas line work through Aug. 28, the city has announced. There is no detour.
