Anderson's clutch hit puts Angels back on top in 9th
st. petersburg, fla. ---- Given a final chance to extend his hitting streak to 23 games, Garret Anderson delivered for the Los Angeles Angels with a ninth-inning infield single that drove in the winning run in a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night.
Anderson struck out with the bases loaded in the seventh, but came through in the same situation in the ninth, after the Rays tied it 4-all on Carlos Pena's RBI double off Jose Arredondo (5-1).
twins 3, athletics 1 -- At Minneapolis, Mike Redmond drove in two runs for the Minnesota Twins, who survived some wildness by Francisco Liriano and beat Oakland to send the Athletics to their 11th straight series defeat.
The last time the A's lost 11 series in a row was 1960, when they played in Kansas City.
white sox 15, mariners 3 -- At Chicago, Ken Griffey Jr. hit one of Chicago's four homers to move into a tie with Sammy Sosa for fifth on the career list.
Griffey's two-run drive in the second inning was his first since Chicago acquired him from Cincinnati on July 31, and No. 609 for his career.
Griffey also had an RBI single in Chicago's six-run first.
yankees 5, blue jays 1 -- At Toronto, Derek Jeter hit a two-run homer, Andy Pettitte pitched seven strong innings to snap a four- start winless streak and the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays.
Jeter's homer in the fourth inning was his eighth of the season. He was 3-for-5 and is two hits shy of 2,500 for his career.
rangers 9, tigers 1 -- At Arlington, Tex., Kevin Millwood scattered six hits in his second complete game of the season, and Josh Hamilton hit one of five homers off Detroit starter Nate Robertson in the Texas Rangers' victory.
orioles 11, red sox 6 -- At Baltimore, Ramon Hernandez and Melvin Mora hit three-run homers, and the Baltimore Orioles overcame an early deficit to beat the Boston Red Sox and avoid a three-game sweep.
Baltimore trailed 4-0 before scoring 10 straight runs against three Boston pitchers.
National League
brewers 5, astros 2 -- At Milwaukee, Manny Parra won for the first time since July 20 and J.J. Hardy hit a two-run homer as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Houston Astros.
Hardy's two-run shot in the seventh provided the insurance runs that the Brewers needed to preserve Manny Parra's first win in six starts.
mets 6, braves 3 -- At New York, Mike Pelfrey pitched a three- hitter for his first career complete game and David Wright homered to lead the New York Mets past the sloppy Atlanta Braves.
Pelfrey (12-8) also delivered at the plate, hitting an RBI single in a five-run first inning, when the NL East leaders took advantage of two Atlanta errors.
phillies 4, nationals 0 -- At Philadelphia, Brett Myers tossed a nine-hitter for his first shutout in four years and the Philadelphia Phillies handed the Nationals their 12th straight loss.
Myers (6-10) struck out nine and walked one in his sixth start since being recalled from the minors on July 20.
cardinals 11, pirates 2 -- At St. Louis, Rick Ankiel and Jason LaRue hit two-run home runs and Todd Wellemeyer beat the Pittsburgh Pirates for the third time this season.
Skip Schumaker had three hits and Wellemeyer (11-4) won his fourth straight decision and added an RBI single for St. Louis.
reds 2, cubs 1 -- At Chicago, Bronson Arroyo allowed three hits and a run in seven strong innings Wednesday night, and the Cincinnati Reds cooled off the Chicago Cubs with a 2-1 victory.
Arroyo (11-10) tied a career high by issuing five walks, but was backed by two double plays in a duel with Cubs starter Ted Lilly, who held the Reds hitless the first five innings.

new york ---- Baseball umpires and management signed an agreement Wednesday that will allow the sport to start using instant replay to help determine calls on the field.
Major League Baseball still hasn't determined when the use of replays will start. Installation of equipment has been going on at ballparks, and officials have said they hoped to start using replay in August.
Replays will be limited to boundary calls, such as determining whether fly balls were fair or foul, or whether they went over fences.
Adam Wainwright, the opening-day starter for the St. Louis Cardinals, has been activated from the 15-day disabled list for the first time since early June.
He will be used as a starter in Friday's game against the Atlanta Braves.
Josh Beckett remains on course to start for the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, although manager Terry Francona won't be overly disappointed if his return gets pushed back again.
The Minnesota Twins activated second baseman Alexi Casilla from the disabled list, getting their No. 2 hitter back in time for a 14- game road trip.
Tom Glavine, pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, has a tear in his flexor tendon, but no ligament damage in his elbow, leaving open the possibility he could return next season.
Kyle Lohse, pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, has been suspended five games for throwing a fastball past the head of Cincinnati pitcher Edinson Volquez last weekend.
